Caspian Horse Breed Profile

History Of The Caspian Horse

The Caspian horse originates from northern Iran is is believed to be one of the old breeds of horses. Ancient writings and artifacts show that a small horse existed as early as 3000 BC and these small horses are shown on the walls of ancient palaces, were used in royal ceremonies and presented as gifts to King Darius The Great.

The Caspian horse was thought to be extinct for nearly a thousand years until it was rediscovered in 1965 by an American born horse breeder living in Iran, Louise Firouz, who discovered a dark bay stallion in a town in northern Iran. Louise bought the Caspian stallion and undertook a search to find more Caspian horses and found only a handful over the coming years. From these Caspian horses Louise formed foundation herds, only to have them seized for food during wartime or confiscated by the Royal Horse Society. Despite these troubles and having to reform Caspian herds Louise Firouz managed to export to Europe 6 stallions and 17 mares between 1971 and 1976 and these horses were the foundation for the Caspian horse in Europe.

Further Caspian horses were exported from Iran in later years to introduce new blood.
