The Appaloosa is a spotted horse and can either be a coloured horse with white spots or a white horse with coloured spots. Although Appaloosa is also a breed of horse originally developed in the USA, other breeds of horse also exist with Appaloosa spotted patterning.
Many horses and ponies with appaloosa patterning have pink skin with areas of dark pigment and this is often shown on the muzzle, the areas around the eyes, anus and genitalia. In addition Appaloosa horses may have white sclera (the area of the eye surrounding the cornea), and hooves with distinct vertical are common.
There are distinct patterns of Appaloosa as follows:
|
White Blanket Appaloosa: The White Blanket Appaloosa is solid coloured with a white area over the hindquarters that may extend over the back. The white area does not contain any spots and the edges of the blanket may be roaned or mottled.

Blanket Spot Appaloosa: The Blanket Spot Appaloosa is solid coloured with a white area over the hindquarters that may extend over the back. The white area contains spots and the edges of the blanket may be roaned or mottled.
| | |
Frosted Blanket Appaloosa: The Frosted Blanket Appaloosa is solid coloured with a white area over the hindquarters that may extend over the back. The white area has a frosted appearance.
| | |
Leopard Spot Appaloosa: The Leopard Spot Appaloosa is pure white with coloured spots over the entire head and body.
| | |
Near Leopard Spot Appaloosa: The Near Leopard Spot Appaloosa is similar to the Leopard Spot Appaloosa but the head (and sometimes the neck), rather than being pure white, are coloured.
| | |
Snowflake Appaloosa: The Snowflake Appaloosa is coloured with white spots over the body.
| | |
Few Spot Appaloosa: The Few Spot Appaloosa is the homozygous Appaloosa (meaning any offspring will be some pattern of Appaloosa). The Few Spot is white with, as the name suggests, just a few spots which may be barely visible.
| | |
Varnish Roan Appaloosa: The Varnish Roan Appaloosa is coloured with white hairs dispersed through the coat on the body and head, and coloured hairs concentrated around the prominent bony parts eg hips, withers, shoulders, kness, hocks and facial bones.
