The Welsh Section D Pony, or Welsh Cob as it is also known, became well established as a breed by the fifteenth century and was used mainly for farm work and as a means of transport, both ridden and in harness. Welsh Cobs were also used by the army for pulling guns and equipment and were ridden by the infantry. Stallion licensing was introduced in 1918 and the best stock was identified by competing in trotting contests.
