I was at my school today, and on the first hour there was a horse in the school who when they started trotting obviously wasn't right, he seems either very stiff or lame - didn't want to trot.
So I took him up, by this time everyone was going 'oh poor boy he looks all in pain' so he had everyone on his side. I took him up and was taking his saddle off, I didn't think to tie him up because he's normally a very good boy about all that sort of stuff, I went around his bum to get the other side of the girth off, and as I was around his bum he started walking off, went to quickly grab him and he sped up, so I sped up and he sped up again! Most of the ponies are tied up in an open area, so he had plenty of space to run. After a few more steps I had to admit defeat and quickly grabbed the saddle so it wouldn't fall off and get broken.
That horse definitely was not lame as I watched him trotting off to the other side of the arena .... does anyone else get those moments where you look at a horse and think they've got you wrapped around their hooves on a tight string? Because today I very much had one of those moments. The look he gave me was one of pure evil lol.

hehe Andi it really does, everyone argues with me when I say he's not stupid - but he's the cleverest horse I know as far as getting out of work is concerned. The way he cuts corners with every poor rider who's on him is not coming from a thick horse!
Rhea - if it was his choice, every day would be 'no not today' his idea of heaven is sleeping flat out in the school with the occasional bit of fuss and regular food!

That seems to be a riding school horse thing- a couple of them at my old one used to do that!! Problem is you find the day you try ride them through it is the day they actually ARE lame!!

It could be that he was being a little s.o.d however it also could be something to do with the saddle - perhaps he isn't comfortable with the saddle / rider on board? If he was sound when trotting off without it on? Just a thought.
