How...
Im not really into showing, but my friend now has a mare and foal..
They went on holiday skiing, and came back with a pregnant haffy, who has now foaled, foal is currently about 2 weeks old.
The mare and sire are both registered and quite well bred, and the foal seems well put together, so the plan is to keep him entire.
We are looking to take them out in about a months time, the show is only about 20 minutes away.
He is is pretty good to handle already.
What is the sort of ettiquette for these classes, where does the foal have to walk? What sort of show do we have to do?
I know how we need to be turned out etc, just not quite what we be expected to do!

We (Alex & I) took Alexs mare and foal showing, 3 different times, it was good fun.
I led the mare while she delt with the foal, we walked round the edge with the others and then got pulled into line, the judge came over looked at both mare and foal then asked us to walk forward almost to the edge of the ring, turnright and walk away from them then turn around and trot towards them. This was the same procedure for all three times.
One thing we did learn quickly was practice was definately required, and who ever trots the mare in front shouldnt go to fast!!!!
Unfortunately for Alex, the first show we went to her mare got quite excited when we asked for trot and went off in a lovely trot, but the foal leapt forward to follow his mum at great speed and sent Alex flying, and she landed on her knees. Luckily the judge didnt hold that against us and still placed us first.

Well i get to wrestle... i mean lead.. the foal.. We better get practicing wiht trotting .. might leave it another week yet though. We have got him walking fairly well now. and he walked across tarpaulin last night.. well lept across it a few times before walking across it, next week we'll crack loading and then onwards to the trotting!
The mare is a bit balshy and pushy too but she seems to be picking things up fairly quickly, i hope she doesnt run off when we try trotting in hand.. last week she was running off in walk.. but that was befor she got a bridle to be led in!

i took mine at 4 months to a very busy county show
luckily she was pretty laid back as i had manic Mum and OH had the foal!
plaited both and put a leather halter on foaly, double bridle on Mum.
walked and trotted up. stood in line, got examined and walked and trotted away from judges.
same as normal inhand classes but more interesting with foals leaping about everywhere. so keep extra distance between you and the pair in front and your wits about you!
trotting up was no problem as we had practiced at home and foaly did it on her own. (Mum got a little anxious though to see baby disappearing off into the distance with that huge trot of hers!)
