There is a naughty fell pony on our common that whenever we go onto the common with our horses, he charges at them, bites and kickes out.
This morning, tony was riding tanner and leading a littly boy on lilly, the fell pony charged at them causing lilly to bolt, tony managed to keep hold of her for a while when lilly turned suddenly and the little boy fell off. Lilly caught the boy on the side as he fell under her, tanner also bolted but tony managed to pull him up.
The pony is becoming more of a pain, not only does he go at our horses but he goes at people walking on the common. I took my niece (20months) and my puppy for a walk, he came over trying to rub on the push chair, frightening my niece (who loves horses).
He is a lovely pony for his owners kids to ride, just a little tinker on the floor. ive about had enough. i have told his owner on a few occasions that he is a pain. she doesnt seem too bothered, just says to give him a good smack. (not that he gives up or moves when you do, he goes back at you)
What do you think i should do?

Put an anonymous complaint in to who ever you would for the common. Its not fair on anyone to have to put up with that :(

The common? is this where people let their horses roam free? not really sure if you will have a say in it though?

It is 240 acres with about 40 horses. You pay £36 a year to put your horse on, and you can complain to the council who will probably warn the owners or tell them to take them off the common.
i put sparkie on the common with holly in may but he jumped out and took himself to his old field, i was greeted by police who had caught him with a dog lead.

I would definately complain, it could be really dangerous one day.

What a odd situation, the common land where people can graze their horses - do they all just turn the horses out as in one big herd over the 240 acres or can you put them in indvidual fields? I would be talking to the land owners about this brat-pony and maybe complain to the Police?

im not sure about the laws on commons i would imagine they wouldnt do much about it and it would take someone getting hurt badly for the horse to be removed, perhaps if there were several complaits about the pony then it could get moved

Not sure If I would be too fussed, its your choice to ride on there? even though people use it as a horse field.

people turn their horses out at one big herd. people are there all the time walking dogs, football matches, golf, cricket and tennis in different areas. The people of the city own the common, it doesnt belong to anyone, the council just maintain it.
we are a riding school that have been there for 65 years and not had many problems, apart from now. other horse owners ride on there too.

If its affecting your business then I definately think it's worth complaining about.

Can't you ride away from this horse? if its 240ac? there is plenty of space to keep out his way.

I'd be carrying a schooling whip with me and letting the pony meet Mr Stick if he bothers you - we have 3 in where I ride Satin, and 2 were a complete pain until Mr stick tickled their tender bits - now they stay well away

He isnt that bothered about a whip, goes for you again when you do use it.
Rhea- if he didnt hang around the gates then we could avoid him. We ride directly across the common. Near 1 gate are the water troughs and the other gate is where he gets fed and tacked up.
