View Full Version : Would you buy a trailer to cut down number of trips to tack shop?

Hey! :D

Ive been working out a whole list full of exactly what things i need to buy each month, which helps spread out the cost instead of lots one month and nearly nothing another month

Either way, Jase needs to do 3 trips to the tackshop - this means enough shavings, chopped straw, megazorb and feed [7 to 9 bags depending] which although we have the pickup which has greatly helped, it would still mean travelling.

It costs Jase about £10 there and back [sadly we still have to use the tackshop in syorks as they can still get the stuff we use, good friends with them and that its only 5 mins from Jase's work] so atleast it means that justifies going over there, and we work it out so that Jase picks stuff up on the late night thursdays after a day 12 hour shift, or on the last day of his night shifts, however he has still had to make the hour there, hour back trip to the tackshop when he's not been at work, once a month, which after a while works expensive!

My thinking is that if we bought a small trailer to go on the pickup, it would then mean he would only need to make 2 trips, instead of 3, which would mean only going when hes at work, so its not a £10 just to get horse feed

Sooo.. im thinking if i bought a trailer at around £300-500 [Jase wouldnt be able to afford one, i could no problem] and its £10 there and back, it would take a while to pay its self off if he's going twice a month to the tackshop, and the money would be saved in Jases pocket for petrol, rather then my own saving.

But aside from all that,

Would you buy the trailer and do 2 trips just from work, so no 3rd trip, and technically save 2 hours on a day you could be doing something else or would you just still do the 3rd trip because £10 and 2 hours isnt much?

I've confuddled myself - Thoughts please!!

If you can afford it then yes, it will cost you less in the long run

Can you ask them to deliver for a little bit extra?

The place is an hour away. For them to deliver it would cost alteast 4x what it costs us to pick the stuff up?

Getting a trailer wouldnt be a problem. Id love to get an Ifor williams one, but it would take much longer to pay off, so i think i'll just go for a steady but battered second hand one!

I think Id be tempted to look at closer tack shops for your needs than having MORE costs of actually having to buy a trailer.

What is it that you can get from the tackshop an hours drive away that you cant get anywhere closer??

You can get bedding and feed in bulk delivered ( obvioulsy I dont know your preferences on bedding/feed etc are) but it may actually work out cheaper to do it that way than having to trapse out to S.Yorks 3 times a month.......(?):)

Oh! Very good point!

The places near us dont sell the Readymash that Scottie has to have, we rang around before we moved, and they dont sell it at all - that could be got when Jase goes to work once a month, but we just started buying their treated chopped straw that they make themselves and their clear bag shavings, which ive not seen the chopped straw from around here

Although i will have a ring around tomorrow and see if theres any shavings that are cheaper nearby, that would cut out one journey in itsself!

Need to practice looking at the bigger picture :D Thankyou Nic! :D

echo what nic has said
failing that think I would just make the extre trip as there is always stuff I need from the tackshop over what i have budgeted/planned for!

Can a more local tackshop/feedstore order in the special stuff you need?

I probably wouldn't buy a trailer as I would rather spend a few hundred quid on something else, and do a 3rd trip - or find a way not to...

Also - haven't you got a trailer? I know it is quite smart and everything but I'm sure it could carry a few bales :)

Trailer is gonna need maintenence which is gonna add extra to cost.
Can I just say (totally off subject) your Jase is a superstar in my eyes,. my OH would not be trailing back andf forth with horse feed, whether it saves me a journey or not, his opinion its my hobby so my responsibility. Sounds harsh but he is a very loving and reasonable bloke so im guessing many other OH's wouldnt bother too.Sorry totally off subject!!!

eeek; we have yes! Only problem is our pickup cant tow it [too heavy!] although ive bribed my aunt into helping us do a mega shop with it in november

Will add i think your all right about the trailer, just figured out it would take over 2 years to pay its self off, duh me!

I agree!! He'd never been into animals let alone horses till he met me, i move in and he kinda had to accept that horses would become a very big part of our lives :P although he doesnt complain as he's lost about 3 stone helping out and he loves handling Scottie as he's easy to do. Everyone thinks hes been into horses before, just because of how willing he is, that sounds horrible of me  i do love him so much though, he helped all of last year looking after the boys when i couldnt, something ill never stop being thankful for!

Add;

Jase says that that was very nice of you to say and that he's very thankful you've been so kind [he also said he feels his ego has inflated, but told me not to put that :D:D:D]

it tends to cost more to tow a trailer than driving without a trailer on so you might not necessarily save anything in petrol bills anyway, can you not find stuff from somewhere closer by most feed stores will order stuff in if you need to especially if you are buying a larger amount of the stuff which im guessing with bedding you probably are

pickups also arent always that great for towing, some can be fine but others are useless, ours would not tow our horse trailer very well at all, although a flat bed might be fine

Haven't you got a nice Equitrek horsebox? I'd just take that and stock up. If the horses' owners have lots of things to buy they tend to take the horse lorry as their Range Rover is poorly and off the road. With 4 big horses (15.3hh, 16.1hh, 16.3hh and 17.2hh) they go through a hell of a lot of feed- a bag of corse mix lasts 4 days, bag of Hi-Fi lasts about 10 days!

i would see if your local horse/tack shop, would order the items you require

buying a trailor and towing one to collect the item would cost alot more in the long run, i would just settle carrying on as you are, whats an extra 2 hours?

but i would see if you could order them into your local store, saves all around

We have asked our most local tackshop if they can order things in, and they cant. We have to order a lot of stuff in as it is :)

Nic has sent me a list of a few places in lincoln so i will be ringing around in a bit to see if we can get anywhere

Twizzel & S&W; yes i do, but our pickup cant tow it , have to get my aunt to - she will be helping us do a huge stock up in november, we should get quite a lot in! :D The ET is over 2 ton, and the pickup is only a lightweight, it wouldnt even manage with it empty!

Im wondering if my aunt would be up for doing a big shop each month.. hmmmm will get asking :D

Thanks guys!! :D

Look on the bag of feed and get in touch with the manufacturers stating that you have moved and can't find a local supplier. They will send you a list of people in the area. There may be a stockist you haven't heard of yet.

If you could afford it then yes, but if you'd struggle then I don't think it would be worth it personally. Like you said, it'd take a while to pay itself off.

Thankyou guys!

Affording one wouldnt be a problem at all, however as it would take a few years to pay its self off, and because others have pointed out i have already got a trailer [just one for horses] might as well use that instead!

Spoke to my aunt and we've arranged to do the stock up once a month, which will only mean 1 trip every month, instead of atleast 3!

Thanks so much for the help guys, it never crossed my mind to use my equitrek, duh on me!:lol:
