I'm really worried about something happening to molly and not being able to afford the vets bills. Also after simone not being insured and all the stress we went through with her i don't want to be in the same situation again!
Now this is where i'm struggling, everytime i go and fill in online forms to get a quote the price is just ridiculous! A while back i put molly's details into petplan and they quoted something like £900 a year, i just cannot afford silly money like that! I'm not sure how to drop the price though, with that one i tried to insure her for 3k but is it worth dropping that to say 1.5k to cut down the overall cost?
The main thing i want is to have her insured for at least 5k worth of vets bills, maybe LOU (although that would probably be pointless if i dropped her market value!), i'm not fussed about covering my tack etc..
I took out a veteran plan for cin once, with 5k's worth of vets cover etc and it only cost me £100 a year. I really don't want to be paying more than £300 for molly, is that realistic or am i being tight?!
Everytime i get a crazy quote i just put off getting insurance which i don't want to keep doing, can anyone help me out or is there someone i can talk to to get the best suited insurance for us?
Also, what do you pay and what does that cover?
thanks in advance!

LOU is pointless if you are only insuring her for £1500, it would probably cost you that much just for the insurance.
I know alot of people hear bad things about E&L but I haven't so when I get a horse thats who Ill go through.
I know alot of companies now require a minimum of a 2 stage vetting to insure.
Pet plan is expensive, try googling South east Insurance Brokers, Ive heard they can be reasonable. Also try NFU. I cnat think of anything else at the mo!! Hope that gives you something to go on with:)

Im with NFU, I pay £35 a month, that was the cheapest I found. Its for a horse thats out competing in everything other than polo pretty much (ironic for a polo pony) and is for 5k vets bills, third party and personal liability. LOU took it up to £50-£55 a month!!
Thats for a £2500, 10yo, 15.1 mare (all of that makes a difference)

the place rhea lists is underwritten by E&L and I wouldnt touch them with a bargepole. Lots of vets wont claim from them- you have to pay and then claim the money back for your own pocket. the reason being that they are hard to get to pay out, and take ages!!
Ooooh and my NFU policy covers alternative treatments as recommended by the vets, a % of MRI scans, money to stable the horse near a vet centre if need be etc- lots of places dont cover that

I'm paying about £38 per month. Didn't include LOU but I think I did include tack. Insured for £2K, 9 year old and it's with Petplan.

thanks the link rhea, they'd only let me insure for what i paid for her and even with only vet bills and LOU it still came out at £35 a month!
nic- thanks for the suggestions i'll try anf get a quote from both of them and see how we go.
loubylou- that sounds pretty good then, will give NFU a ring. thanks for the heads up over that website, i'd never heard of them and would rather use something well known.
CDR- thanks.

All 3 of mine are insured by pet plan for vet fee's only. The main reason being that they will insure my 2 veterans up to 25, so Dina is with them too, to make my life easier, and I got money off for having 3 horses insured with them. I am a member of the BHS for my public liability cover and personal accident, as it is cheaper. I don't bother with all the added on bits. ie tack, lou, disposal, etc. as I will deal with it if it happens.

I tend not to insure for the full value of the horse, just so long as you have vet bills, if you file for loss of use or what ever having a horse you valued at £1000 is better than getting no money at all
Ollie is only insured for £5000 which he is no where near worth and my istructors advanced mare is insured for £6000 and vet bills so that you have enough to replace the horse if necessary but its the vet bills that are killers
or to make it cheaper take loss of use off that sometimes can really push the premium up, and you tend to have to get five stage vetted, just do vet bills, theft death and straying,
the price you expect to pay is usually around 10% of the horses value

I am insured with NFU and I think they are brilliant. I have been insured with them ever since I have owned ponies and I have only claimed the once with Chance three years ago. They were brilliant and sent me my cheque and paid the vets straight away, nothing was ever questioned by them. In fact I was really worrying about Chance's insurance as she is now a veteran and because I have been with NFU for over twelve years Chance has still got full insurance up till she is 20.

Sorry don't quite get this? Its not E&L?
Most places won't pay unless you pay out first anyway.

Mine are all insured with NFU mutual. I pay approx £35 a month per horse. My horses are all insured to a value of £5000, they don't require a veterinatry certificate if insured for under £5000, though if you have a recent one you sould submit it, veterinary fees they cover £5000 per accident. Mine are insured for any injury and all are down as eventers, the only clauses I curently have is that none can compete at above BE Inermediate, I have to pay 1/2 hospitalisation cost (never come to over £150 for a 2 weeks stay) and 1/2 the cost of a MRI on the current premium I pay.
They've been utterly fantastic, I also noticed on my last claim form that they will pay the bill for you so if your vets agrees they pay the vet direct (less a £150 excess) rather than you having to pay the vet and then NFU paying you.
Last year, no questions asked, they paid out over the year the full £5000 I was entitled to on Basils lameness, they also paid out £3000 for his eye surgery. My premiums did not go up. This year I've currently got 3 open claims with them, Prince's tendon treatment, scans, injections, drains etc.., John's fall (£1000's) and now new lameness totally unrelated to the accdient. I've easily saved over ten thousand pounds due to being insured.
They're super on the phone, send claim forms out within 48 hours and I usually get cheques back within 3 weeks of sending in my receipts.

I am with scottish equestrian. Insured for £2500, £5k vets fees, £100 excess and this is £28pm.
I was with e & l and when Ben hurt his ear they paid out straight away with no problem, I only changed as they put my premium up.
