Well it started with a text message first thing this morning from my YO telling me that Baby had escaped from the field and the fence was down!
I arrived at the yard to find it was the fence between the mares and geldings and all the mares and geldings WITH THE EXCEPTION OF CHIP (what a good boy he is :worship:) had escaped into the surrounding pasture which has very long, lush grass! They had obviously been out a while as Baby wasn't even grazing when I got to her. She had a very sorry look on her face and looked pleased to see me "thank goodness you've arrived Mum, it was terrible coz I've had to eat all this grass and now I can't even move". Had a quick look over her and she seemed fine, put her back in her field after a very long walk all the way around all the paddocks and then got Chip in as we had planned to go for a hack. He seemed a bit tired and plodded along a bit but we did have a couple of nice canters and he decided that he wanted to 'win the race' so overtook the other two horses that we were out with... .
The hack was great but when we got back and I was untacking him, I noticed what I thought was blood in his mouth and on further inspection saw that it was an ulcer type sore just on the inside of his top lip. Baby got a couple last year and apparently its caused from buttercups and other vegetation. I ride him in a Dr Cooks bitless bridle so didn't notice the sore whilst I was tacking him up. So after hosing him down, I bathed his mouth with saline solution. Anyway he was happily munching his hay without any discomfort and as it was such a lovely hot day, I thought it would be a good time to tidy his mane with the solo comb. I spent ages with him and he went from having a doze to eating his hay and dozing again. All of a sudden he started to 'hyperventilate', nostrils flaring. I walked him down the drive and back to see how he was and when we got back to his stable, he had a nice big drink of water and was as right as rain after that. An hour later another lady went to get her TB out of his field and she said he was doing the same thing until he had a drink too??? Must be because they are starting to get their winter coats and felt hotter than usual. Quite odd!
I left him in his stable for the rest of the afternoon as the flies were unbearable and at least it was cool and he had a nice big haynet. He drank loads of water in his stable for a change, he doesn't usually do that.
I thought it would be a good idea to bring Baby in too and when I got her to her stable to clean her feet out, I noticed a swelling (like wingalls) on her hind left fetlock !!! That must have happened when they broke out of the field but she trotted up sound so hopefully its nothing serious. Cold hosed that for a while and put her in her stable and she went straight to bed !
Sorry it's so long but what a strange day!!!
