dragged my mum along to a local ODE today to watch. i was suppose to be entering myself but as i sold my horsebox last week couldnt go. (sold my horsebox within 24hrs of advertising it! shocked because its the end of season so expected to still have it for this weekend)

anyways.... watched abit of the cross country. looked like an inviting course. me and perdy would of enjoyed it. then went onto watch the show jumping. a few good rounds and a few not so good but then a girl went into the ring on a gorgeous liver chesnut arab. horse was a little nappy going in but nothing major happily trotted across arena, cantered a circle fine and approached the first jump. suddenly started napping, trying to turn round and going backwards at speed. she gave it a few smacks but her horse clearly didnt want to go forward so went up. the first rear was only a few feet off the ground but you could see the whites in the horses eyes and his back legs were shaking so it was obvious that was the first and only warning that horse was going to give his rider. the arab went backwards again and once more she hit him on his bum a few times really hard. the whole time she was screaming at the horse to fu***ng move.once again giving him no choice but to go up. this time it was full height and everybody gasped. at this point the bell rang and she was asked to leave the ring over the tannoy. still her horse wouldnt move(the first jump was facing towards the exit so she still had to get him to go in that direction) so she dismounted. at this point i thought she would just lead him out of the ring slightly embarrased about not even being able to get him with 10ft of the first jump but no....

she jumped off still shouting and swearing and proceeded to to whip her horse! i was so shocked. and dissapointed that someone would even do that:(:(:(

i have never seen so many people move so fast into a ring. i felt so sorry for her horse. no doubt he will be in for another beating next time. i also very much doubt he will even walk into the ring next time in anticapation of whats to come.

Thats awful, she should be asking her self what caused her horse to do this?

My mum would have took the whipe off her and beat her with it.

Where abouts was this Jodee?

That's terrible! That happened once at our interschools competition and my friend loudly said, "How awful!" (plus a few more choice words about the girl's behavior that don't need to be on the forum). The girl absolutely ripped into her for it, ended up formally complaining to the show board and getting her suspended. Even then though, you know their behavior's not going to change at home because someone taught them it was okay. :( Poor horses.

people were ready to whip her and alot of people were shouting at her. she was asked to leave the showground so she might think twice next time but like flambards said she will still do it at home.

one why would you ever think that was something that would help and two why enter a compettion if your horse is likely to do something like that, and then beat the crap out of it in public stupid person

stupid cow, doesnt deserve to have a horse if she does stuff like that. obviously cant be bothered to put the time in to prepare the horse properly.

I can't understand people, hardly a nice experience for either of them, why not call it quits and leave the arena calmly.

Some people are so set on winning they forget their horse is an animal and not a machine x

Goodness me - do people get disciplined at all for this sort of behaviour in public?

It is so sad that horses are still treated that way in this day and age when we should know better. I can understand her feeling very frustrated and embarrassed but to whip the poor thing and carry on beating the horse when she got off is horrendous.

You never see the top riders behaving that way (well never in public anyway). They always seem to retire gracefully if their horses won't do what they're being asked to do. I've only ever seen one top show jumper (Ellen Whittaker) get into a bit of a strop when her horse wouldn't go down the bank at Hickstead but she certainly didn't beat it.
