Been hacking Neo out over the last few days. It's only been 4 weeks since the surgery on my foot and ankle but its feeling great and Neo has been so good. Had a few lovely hacks around the nature reserve.
Today I took him out on his own with my other half on foot with us. He had a minor nap on the way out but as soon as we were out he was as good as gold. He's always led when he's out with other horses and I don't think he cares if they're with him or not. We passed a couple of horses coming back from a hack and he didn't even think about trying to turn around and follow them.
All was going well until we were walking along a grass bank. We were traversing across it at and angle so he had to have one side higher than the other. He was rushing a bit and as usual more interested in what's around him than where his feet are going! He tripped and went down on his knees and I went over his shoulder. Fortunatley it was a soft landing and as he was on his knees it wasn't that far too fall.
Simon caught him. He didn't run away anyway and soon just stood there having a munch on the lush grass! Got back on and he was fine so continued around the field, but did get off again to step him over the log we need to cross to get out of the field as he just didn't feel balanced. Prob more my nerves than him as we've been over it before!!
Annoyingly I'd only just said to yard owner yesteday that he was feeling more sure footed!! I was worried as he did seem to trip and stumble quite a lot and until the incident today he's hardly done it recently.
I know he's not the first to take a fall on that bank though (we were only walking I think the last horse was charging along!). Next time we'll either stay at the bottom or go straight up!
