Since Baby's adventure on Sunday when she escaped from her field, she has a lump on the outside of her back left fetlock joint that looks like a wingall.

She isn't lame and it doesn't appear to cause her any discomfort when I press it. She's probably banged it on a fence pole that was knocked down. I have cold hosed it and applied cooling gel. Can a knock result in a wingall or is it more likely to just be a simple bruise that will go down in time?

It might be a windgall or it might be a bruise, windgalls come from work on hard ground. Magic has a few that don't bother him *touch wood*

Baby's looks similar to yours but hers is on the outside at the back. I'm going to put a magnetic bandage on it to see if that helps.

not sure if knocks can cause them but i imagine they probably can and she had a good fool around after espcaping which could of brought it up

cold hosing can help, magnet boots may also be good, they rarely or never i dont think cause any problems with them staying sound just dont look that great

I would probably give it a few more days,

Windgalls can show up and dont need anything doing to them [i,e draining] as theyre usually caused by a reasonable/normal amount of joint fluid that has pushed out into the skin around the joint after a knock.

If she was lame then id say get it drained as she'd be in quite a bit of discomfort, but as you say she isnt, then a few more days should be fine. They are really common and quite a few horses have them with no problems while in full work. Because its come from a knock, id probably ring your vet for advice in a few days if it is hot/swollen still in a few days time, although all they could possibly do is administer anti inflammatories if it isnt swollen too much
