View Full Version : When I was a kid......

Thought I'd post some pics of where I used to work. It was an arab racing/breeding/showing stud in Warwickshire. I got to race ride, show, and watch loads of mares foaling, and bringing on youngsters, handling stallions etc

I've loads of pics somewhere but havent been able to find the bulk of them since we moved in October, only found these few, same with my own horses, can only find a handful :(

on to the pics then....

First off "A touch of Class", part bred arab gelding used for jumping and the first "race practise", like a school horse, never seen a race track but he was a good boy to take new students on their first race exercise

One of the arab stallions "African Gold"

2 of the youngsters "Savra" (2 yrs old in pic) and "Menita" (1yr old in pic)

Another stallion "Kheruella"

and one of African Gold's colt foals "Jed"

Kheruella is stunning!

and he was fantastic too, such a sensible stallion, and very kind. All the other arab stallions there were pains in rears, African Gold used to try grab you with his teeth as you walked past, and if you didnt watch him he would gradually move his arse over when mucking out till you were cornered with his rear pointed at you and his ears flat back threatening.

The other nice stallion was a TB called Face the Wall, or Fellow as we called him, but I would imagine most the horses I have pics of would be long gone now, this is over 20 years ago, fellow died about 2 years after I left, Kheruella was sold but he was about 15 in that pic, African Gold was 18 IIRC when I left.

I have just found a recent pic of the foal "Jed", couldn't remember his proper registered name so had a search on google, he was bought by the ex headgirl of the stud (Lynn) after she lost the colt she had bought (African Fire) when she first left to get married, in an accident in the field not long after she took him home.
Google images, dont ya just love google?
The foals full name was African Emir, and dont know how old this pic is but Lynn still looks exactly the same! And no its not a huge arab stallion, Lynn was and obviously still is a little dot!

I got so many pictures somewhere, so many memories. Have heard that Pat Westwood (who I worked for) is no longer breeding, I suspect she gave up when African Gold died, she had other stallions but apparently sold them on and just kept a handful of mares. Even her other top stallion went, So Black Al Arabi, and I believe he was killed in an RTA a few years ago, think he was somewhere in Scotland at the time. Dunno what happened to the rest....

African Gold is my horse's great grandfather. I'm glad to say Rene hasn't inherited any of African Gold's naughty ways! Rene's a pure star and would never dream of grabbing anyone with his teeth or threaten anyone with his back end.

Who was his great grand er dam? I have had a look at the pics, he looks nice. African Gold was a lovely looking Arab, its a shame he was such a pig at times, tho his ridden manners were much better than his stable manners.
