View Full Version : My darling Kita's gone forever

I don't know how to begin to write this. I know technically I don't own Kita anymore, but she is still my baby to me.
This morning I received a phone call to say that this morning my precious girl was PTS due to acute grass sickness. Apparently for the past two days she had pulled away from the rest of the herd, and was spending all her time around the water trough. Late last night she began pouring mucous from her nose, and this morning the vet confirmed it was acute grass sickness. They decided to have her PTS.
I can't help but feel I betrayed her. Although her new home seemed to be the perfect place for her, she was obviously not cut out for 24/7 turnout. I should have brought her home. :( My poor baby. Why is everything going so wrong???
I love you so much my precious Kita, I am so very very sorry. I'll love you forever baby girl. :crying:

One of ours got grass sickness quite a few years ago, back then it was even less understood then it is now, it's horrible and comes on so quick
It's not your fault at all, poor Kita

like the others, i am so sorry for you. Ive had my fair share of these threads so i know that these words tend to wash over at first but Grass sickness could have come on at any time in any field with no trigger known. It wasn't being out 24/7 or bad management on their part, it was a perfect home and they have plenty of happy mares to prove it. That was the best place possible for her but clearly fate found her time was up.
There is nothing anyone could have done. It wont make you feel better and im so sorry, you have us all with you.

Hayley I have not got any words.. I am so so sorry.. Ditto Sasca, it wasn't a case of anyone or anything being at fault.. Its one of those awful things that just seems to happen with no real cause..
You in no way betrayed that little mare - you did the exact right thing by her - you knew she wasn't happy to be a ridden horse so you let her go to a happy, established loving herd and home and its just tragic that this has happened now.
All my love
RIP Kita, run free now and find peace xxx

it is easiyer said than done but please do not blame yourself, this could have happened even if she had stayed with you, its just one of those things. It was her time to go and see my Bo Bo and many other lovely horses we have lost on here in recent times. I truly am so sorry for your loss. x

Hayley I've just seen this  I'm absolutely devastated for you :( I just don't know what to say. I didn't realise grass sickness could cause such a fast deterioration, I have only ever known it to take months to get to that stage.
You can't blame yourself and the only good thing to come out of this is that Kita will run free forever. Neither you nor she will ever have to worry about her being mistreated again, by anyone. She will always be with you in your heart and your Mum will take good care of her x

31st May 2010, 09:45 AM
Oh goodness Hayley, words fail me. What a horrible, horrible thing :( But to echo everyone else, there is nothing that can be done for grass sickness. It is, very sadly, just something that happens and happens very quickly. It's not down to bad management. You chose the best home possible for her and it was a GREAT home for her. You are in no way to blame for this AT ALL.
I know what it's like to think that it's your fault and to blame yourself for a horse leaving this life, but it helps no one and nothing. Accidents and cr4p happen and we have to accept that it happens unfortunately....but you did NOTHING WRONG! Nothing! You did everything right for that horse....everything.
Sending you all the love in the world sweetheart xxxx

i'm so sorry hayley to hear this. I dont get on much these days and have just seen this.
Grass sickness is an awfull thing which we unfortunatley still dont know enough about, but please beleive us all when we tell you this is not your fault, you gave Kita all the love and attention she deserved and always had her best interests at heart, and she knows it. Apple is right when she says that some are just to good to be among us....

Please don't blame yourself hun as you did nothing wrong. She is not in pain anymore, or even in fear of what people want of her. She has been adored by you and had gone to a great home, so the last couple of years she has known kindness and love.
She will play and run forever free! And Storm died young so will look out for her and show her the way xxx

Thak you so much for all your kind, reassuring replies. Now that I am over the initial shock, I can see she may have been susceptible to it where ever she was. I read about some of the factors thought to increase the chances of grass sickness. One was moving to new pasture. Another was stress, and another being between 2 and 7 years of age. She was kind of high risk from that point of view.
In a way, it means I can stop worrying about her now. At least where she is now, she is not stressed out, or in pain, or afraid, and her skin is not going to be flaring up.

I'm so sorry to hear this hayley... please don't beat yourself up. it is one of those horrible conditions that comes on so fast and we really don't know enough about. A horse at our yard diet of it a few years ago and he was in NONE of those high risk groups you described... its just fate.
It is very sad but as you say at least you don't haveto worry about her any more.
Run free precious girl. RIP Kita xxx

Oh no poor girlie, grass sickness is a really odd and tricky illness theres little anyone can do about it or anything much you can do to prevent it
Jill
31st May 2010, 07:00 PM
Oh, no, no. Oh Hayley. That is terrible. I am so, so sorry.
But you didn't let her down, you know. This is a much more common problem than people realise and you just can't predict it. I've only known about it for a couple of years and it scared the hell out of me when I first learnt what it was.
It is so sad that it has turned out this way. Kita will now never be passed from pillar to post, she will never have to be sold on if her last owner's circumstances change, but I suppose this is of very little consolation to you at the moment.
I am gutted.
Christine

I have only just sen this and really couldn't believe it when I saw the title!!
I am so sorry ZM, never ever blame yourself, you gave her the best chance to enjoy her life with you, and then the best ending to her life in her new home, she was obviously very happy being a horse and being with her herd.
It's an awful way to go, but it is no ones fault and she will be sadly missed by everyone i'm sure!
It's true he only takes the best back and only the good die young. She'll go on and enjoy life with all the horses everyone on here has lost throughout the years!!
