I have said for a long time that he is too clever. My farrier has now said exactly the same thing to me.
Last week I had a go at longreining Alfie. It went ok, but not completely to plan, he was nappy towards Sarah proper trying to lean on her, and got stressy and stroppy when she gradually left him.
I thought it was to do with him learning, and left it on a good note.
I was thinking about it all week, and going over it in my head what he was doing, and it all pointed to Sarah being there. He was very very reliant on her.
He had got it in principle, was moving forward from my voice, but still searching and making sure she was there.
So today I thought i'd have a go seeing how he would react to it without her there at all.
Figured if he couldn't get it then I would leave it and go back a stage, but as he has been so clever with everything else it was worth a shot.
And god am I pleased i did!! He was absolutely brilliant, was moving forward really well.
Standing needs a little bit of help, but the basics are there. He was nappy to the field gate to start with, but learnt everytime he tried to turn towards the field he was turned away from it again and cottoned on very quickly.
Even thought about having a little jog. Spent 15mins on it with him and put him back out with the others.
He seems to be very reliant if he is given the chance, but is very very independant when given the chance and seems to gain alot of confidence when he is made to be a bit more independant aswell!
Think he may even have enjoyed it a little bit!!
