The skewbald on the right - the guy was chucking buckets of water over it and you could see the horse loving it!

Wow its some place, Id love to go for the experience, aparently you can pick up quality horses there but have also seen the fair on welfare programs putting across the opinion that they are cruel to the horses, guess its one of those places you'd have to see for yourself before judging, id imagine some folk are better horsemen than others like everywhere else.

Looks like a fun day out though, but Id just want to buy them all!!!!!

I went a couple of years ago and loved it.

The river is a ritual Lee, they have to wash them in it. It is a huge market for selling horses and they go for mega money!! There was a couple I drooled over, lol. They also trot them up and down a road showing them off. It is a fantastic atmosphere and if you want to go one year, you are more than welcomwe to stop at mine xx

Well I saw no cruelty just some bad riding ;)

I know there is cruelty that goes on at Appleby but I also know the fair is overflowing with police officers and welfare officers, yes horses still get abused but its the same for all horse sports, Ive seen some horrific cruelty to horses at small horse shows. It happens but thankfully Appleby is regulated with officers, not saying thats an excuse in fact not saying I agree with the fair but it happens. Its a shame the small handful of distasteful horse handlers have to give it a bad name

I was there today too! and have lots of pictures, the place was swarming with police, rspca and vets! Yes there will still be cruelty going on, but it was definately not as obvious as previous years! There were even mounted police this year! I have more pics, might add them soon!

I wonder if I saw you Fell Lover :)

Bex im really sorry but i wouldn't class that as one of my todo things :o I genuinly have never heard of it before, and all the press i do hear about is bad! Which really doesn't help things. Im sure it is good in some ways, but i would have to read up on it more x

:D No worries! I'm just used to people talking about it every year that its surprising to hear of someone who doesnt know about it. Yes its had bad press but there are literally hundreds (if not a thousand) of horses there and it only takes a couple of bad uns to ruin it.
Yes there are some stunning horses at Appleby but its also a cultural experience. The families that trade there are following hundreds of years of tradition.

I had to laugh at the pics, it's pikey's everywhere and then, all of a sudden, a gorgeous blonde with Dubarry boots and a full set of tack. Random!
Great photos. It's nice to see the positive side of it as I too have only ever seen and heard the negatives.

what the 'dunking of the horses head' all about?

To cleanse it im sure I heard someone say on youtube???

Sasca
6th June 2010, 11:34 AM
they are messy buggars though…im sure the council 'love it' with the litter picking afterwards!

generally, this is a fantastic display of some fantastic cobs and trotters, some of the best in the country. the biggest thing is that this is where you will see all of those dealers that also drive and ride yearlings and are generally complete pigs, nasty pieces of work. But it is also where the breeders of the best cobs go to display and exchange stock, some for tens of thousands of pounds, you cant mistreat a horse you want to sell for that money!

I think you just need to accept it for what it is. In the latest years, it getting policed a lot more so that the breeders come through more then the **** in the public eye. You will get both.

To cool them down I would have fault, I don't agree with the dunking of the head, traditional or not.

Wow Sandy, loved the photos! I must go next year :) There are some massive trotting races held at Appleby during the fair. Sadly I couldn't enter my boys as it's run by a different organisation, but I've always wanted to go for a weekend of trotting, socialising and haggling. I love haggling with pikeys, so much fun, but you have to be in a strong mood!

That made me laugh too Sparkey, it looks like she's just stepped out of one of those adverts where the horse gallops along the beach into the sunset with the blonde on board

Some lovely horses there, I'd like to go for the experience.

Great pictures Fell lover it looks a great experiance even if its not everyones cup of tea. I have mixed feelings about Appleby but I have to say my negative ones all come from what I have seen and heard and unitll I have actually been I will not pass judgement as I am sure the good outweighs the bad. The condition of the horses in your pics show that they are obviously cared for.
Thanks for sharing.xx

People have to go there with an open mind as there has been some bad publicity (and rightly so in most cases) but there are also some beautiful horses that go for mega bucks! As usual, it is a minority that spoil it for others.
Liz, the trotting races are a big part of the week. I was actually amazed at how flaming fast they go!!!

I also thought the sudden appearance of glamorous blonde lady was random lol.

Think Appleby is like any big event of any kind really, will always get the odd few people who lower the tone and cause problems, doesn't mean the event in itself is a bad thing.I would love to go if it wasn't so far away!!

Have to bring it up peeps, sorry for being a bore and all that, but should we really keep referring to people as 'pikey's'?? I know it's a common term used to describe certain groups of people, but is still derogatory and stereotyping, and I for one don't like it TBH,let's keep it nice eh:)

Lovely pics FL,glad you had a wonderful day:) You sure you didn't come home with any more coloured ponio's that you're not telling us about??;):D
