View Full Version : Shetland pony travel query

Hi,

I am new to this forum site and was wondering if there is anybody out there who could help me.

I am due to collect my two new babies at the begining of September, two shetland weanling colts! :D

The eventual aim is to train them to drive when they get older, but for now they will just be very well handled and get used to lots of sights and sounds!

However, I have never had shetlands before, and I am in the process of altering my double horse trailer so they can travel in a safe way. I have come to altering the height of the brest bars but I am not sure what is a good height to put them. Can anybody help by telling me a suitable height for the average shetland pony chest? Their Sire stands at 32" and the mares are both just slightly smaller.

Any help would be great

A lot of people travel shetlands of all ages loose for this reason. Too high and they go underneath, too low and they're over the top. Shetlands are reknowned for it. Sorry I can't be of any use.

Agree with FF - just leaving the trailer open without any partitions etc would be best probably x

My best friends mum had her trailer adjusted for her two shetlands. Shes never travelled them loose and shes never had problems with them getting over or under.
But whilst they are young I agree with FF and FL just to travel them loose.

Unfortunatley I have a very old style trailer with a fixed partition, so it can not be removed. Therfore I can not take it out and travel them loose in the whole box, and must keep them in the stalls. As the stalls are too small for them to turn round in it would not be safe to travel them loose and thus I need to have them tied and hence need to know a suitable breast bar height.

Anni~Bell, how did your friends mum adjust her trailer?

I'd put them so they will be at the suitable height for an adult shettie (nor sure what height that would be) and in the mean time, I'd cross tie them, just to be sure that they are safe. I'm having the same issue with my section a yearling, and am getting an extra set of breast/breach bar securing points put into my 506 to accomodate her needs!
