View Full Version : Any hope for my old girl teeth?

My pony is 34 years old and her teeth are just poor poor poor. It's got to the stage where she can only pull up long grass with her front teeth, yet can't chew it cos she doesn't have enough back teeth, so she sucks out all the goodness then spits it back out again. And the short grass she can eat she cant pick because her front teeth have shifted so much. My dad's going to show a dentist he knows some photos before he calls him out properly because he feels there probably isn't much that can be done. Thought I'd post them on here to see if anyone had had the same problem and if they had any success.

It's so stressful because although we're managing to keep her weight on by feeding her mix, chaff and a soaked fibre she's supposed to graze all day and find at night she has nothing to eat because she's eaten everything from her buckets during the day. Also she has to be kept in a field next to her field mate so her field mate doesn't eat her food so i think she's pretty lonely aswell. She's so full of herself still (still ridden, still charges around like a naughty youngster and when in company seem all jolly and happy) and yet her teeth are really letting her down and will probably be the cause to let her go in the end

My god, that looks bad, I am not expert but I would have thought vet/dentist could do something to make her more comfortable, let us know how you get on.

Unfortunatly Ji got impaction colic on tuesday and by wednesday they had found so many complications inside her stomach and intestines she had to be put down today. We did ask about her teeth aswell and the vet said there would have been nothing they could have done to them anyway :( So sudden i don't think it's quite sunk in yet, but in a way the shocks helping me cope i think.

Thanks guys, was shocking and it did make it worse the vet constantly saying she's in such good health and such a lovely old girl but she also said it wasn't cureable even if she was a 3 year old so we let her go. First time i watched any animal be put to sleep but surprised i can say at the time despite being distraught i didn't find it destressing to watch, it was almost surreal in a calm relieving way. Was strange, but hard to cope with now i'm getting used to life without a horse.
