i took coop to a show on Sunday and put him in the mountain and moorland class. well on the schedule it says 'mountain and moorland - British native breeds' now i could be wrong but i thought native breeds were like: new forest, exmoor, dartmoor, Walsh's, Connie's, highland, shetties....
so are friesians a British native?
i was pretty naffed off actually because i didn't think they were (?) and the judge placed a friesian stallion first and a friesian foal second!

Are you sure they were Friesian? As Native Dales and Fell ponies have very predominant Friesian roots, often looking like almost mini Friesians but they are Native English horses.
However, if you're sure they were Friesian's this isn't really on, but I'm pretty sure they'll have been Dales or Fell ponies.

Not sure but you should have said something to the judge about it.

i'm pretty sure the stallion was def a friesian as he was massive and their was a fell pony in the class (which i honestly thought would win and didn't get placed) i think a few people weren't happy with the judge that day. it seemed who ever had a double bridle on in the ridden classes (if they could ride or not!) was being placed first.
i think i might have a picture of the friesian at the show so il put it up on here.

I was thinking of taking Una along to a local show, they ONLY had MM and coloured classes so i emailed organiser and asked what classes i was supposed to do with a friesian. She told me to put her in the MM classes....! I didnt go cos i didnt want to upset people, but this may well be what happened here.

Wow, thats shocking! I guess maybe judges assume people will just think Friesian's are Dales'....

Never heard of a friesian in the M&M class, they wouldnt allow it up here!!!!
Im afraid Holland is not native to Britain therefore it shouldnt be allowed!!!

Oh thats a little unfair. This is one of the reasons why I don't like showing - much perfer Show Jumping which has simple rules and if you break them your out... simples!
Our little local show has a 'Heavy horse class' which is designed for Cobs, M+M and big breeds such as shires etc I think it's a nice 'general' class for a small show that combines a lot of smaller classes.
Such a shame. I went to a RC show once years and years ago and entered the Arab class in hand with my Arab (obviously) but you won't think it was an Arab class... The first and second went to TB's!!!!!! Us with the Arabs came right down the line.... there was a lot of complaints that day!

This winds me up too! Also there are people who think Fjords and Haffies can enter M+Ms too!
I guess if you're new to the showing game the class title 'Mountain and Moorland' might confuse some people who think that Fjords and haffys originate from moorland areas etc. Maybe the class should be called Native M+Ms... just to save confusion!

i can understand actually how people would get confussed with the MM classes being new. maybe they should call it native MM might save some confussion :) but maybe you would think the judge would have a quiet word with them when they inspection the horses that their not MM's (?)

Yes it is definitely the judges job to let them know they are in the wrong class. The judge should not be placing them right up high.

ive seen it getting more common lately as these breeds are becoming more popular, we had a haffy in the m&m class at the last show. that one didn't get placed rightly so but to actually place the friesians is rediculous, the dont meet the class criteria, no matter how good they look, so cant get placed....****** judges!

At my local shows there is a Foreign Breeds class (excluding warmbloods and Arabs). Maybe there should be more of these classes as there are so many foreign breeds around these days.
