Jaffa as a yearling.. Sadly he died only a few months later (caught in wire grrrr). Not mine but I named him :)

Fairyhouse as a foal. Now 4 and racing, although Hasty beats her every time!

Grey Filly as a foal

And 2 and a half

Now a strapping 6 year old and winning races :)
Stirling 2 and a half

Now 6, and due to the fact my ex boss didn't sell him when he had the chance to, he is heading for the scrapheap and fast. Never known anybody to ruin as many horses as that man.
Nifty + foal

Ex boss kept Nifty, who is now feral on the hill, and wants £3k for the foal, so it won't be sold, so it will end up on the scrapheap like the others. Shame because he's a nice 3 year old now.

Forgot to say, if you're serious about buying a foal there are a few trotter sales in the Autumn (think there's one at York coming up) and prices have been dead low these last few years.

I really cannot recommend the breed enough. Vinny is not a one off, he's a pretty typical Standardbred.
I meet people all over the place who have kept Standardbreds after retiring them and been amazed at the things they can achieve. I'm actually living with a woman whose first Standardbred (or was he just half STB? can't remember) won Man Vs Horse three times and still holds the record for the fastest time (something like an hour and a half which is insane). The same horse was brilliant cross country. Obviously he got her hooked on the breed and they've had dozens over the years who have gone on to do all kinds of things after retiring. One of them is good at dressage!
I have known dozens of STBs in my time (as well as cobs, hunters, TBs, Arabs) and I don't think I will ever want another kind of horse. It's their attitude which is so lovely. Generally they are pretty sensible and relaxed, but if you want to have some fun with them they are ready at once!
Take Vinny - yesterday he moved to a farm on the other side of Wales. I gave him an hour to settle in then rode him round the training track (2 laps to the mile) at dusk. I haven't made any attempts to school him since last summer, but within ten minutes he was working in a beautiful outline. We did a couple of laps of this, then a couple of laps bombing around pacing, one more lap trotting in an outline and then popped over some jumps. No problem :)
They are natural workers who hold their fitness well and will happily try ANYTHING.
If you are serious about buying any let me know because there is one bloodline I would probably avoid if I was looking for a riding horse (the 'hot' line which has the same reputation as TBs).
