He is put down as roan appaloosa in his passport. But the term 'roan' can be used to described rabicano and sabino I believe?
2003 When I bought him:

Classic roan horses normally have a dark head and rabicano doesnt normally extend much forward of the shoulder.
Was he assported at birth or when he was older. He does have a "blanket" its not very clear as the roaning has made the contrast hard to see. Also in the pic of him clipped the clipped area looks like he's "heavily snowflaked" (white spots on dark)
The problem is he could be both of them AND have LP roaning (which covers varnish roan and other spotted roaning)
I'm guessing when he was born his body for the most part was dark wth a white spotted blanket and then he snowflaked/roaned out over time (they can do in a very short time)
Do you have parentage and who is he passported with?

Thats what I thought Bex- he is a mixture of just about everything haha! Although you can't see it properly, his blanket is more defined in real life. But he is snowflaked once clipped, although looking back at pictures it seems it the amount has increased (was less white mixed in previous years).
He was bought over from Ireland without papers. He was passported in 2004 at around 12years of age (dentist thinks anyway). I have no idea of parentage, but I presumed one or more of his relatives carried the above genes. The vet who passported him wasn't sure what too put down though as, as you can see in 2003 he was grey (few spots) and then started to become more strawberry roan with multiple spots of brown and white (most commonly on his front legs and chest) and developed a 'blanket'.
Special horse!

Another mystery man! I was going to send you a link to a friends picture on facebook. One of her stallions could be his brother on colour match )except that he's a miniature! Her albums are friends only though so i realised the link wouldnt work for you anyway.

Thats a shame! Would have loved to have a look! Would you be able to ask her if you could show it to me via facebook? (Celina Jayne Pasha if you haven't added me)
Could it be possible that one parent was roan and the other spotted? Or atleast either parents down the line carried one or both of these genes? Ie. Mother was an appaloosa- giving him spots or 'blanket' (although I know appys can carrying or be roan too) and the father varnish roan type or something similar.
I think the only thing I can confirm with him is that he has cob in his parentage! I'd love to know his parentage and breeding. Wondering if I put an ad up on some Irish websites, I would get a response? hmm.

You're in exactly the same position as me Celina! B was brought over from Ireland aswell, no dam or sire recording, wasn't passported till late. Haven't a clue how you would describe his colouring but I'm getting a DNA test to rule out the grey gene.
