Trec - where to start?!?

Hello, having read a few of the posts in here i would love to have a go at trec sometime in the future...can anyone give me an insight on how to get started, what is involved ect.

You can practise loads at home!

Its basically a number of different obstacles you have to complete like:

Walking as fast as you can
Canteing as slow as you can
A jump
A bridge
A footbridge
A S-Bend
Getting on/off and leaving horse alone and horse has to stay still
Opening a gate which your not allowed to let go of
Ducking under branches
Weaving in and out of poles (either in trot or canter as long as its controlled and you don't knock the poles)
Walking over taurpalin
Water crossing

I can't think of any more but there is loads. Basically you have to complete the walk and canter part and then you have to do the 10 obstacles they have set out. You get marked out of 10 for each obstacle and you also get timed for the whole thing. You can miss obstables out but you don't get marked for it.
Its basically great fun and if you aren't itnrested in competing seriously its great for that too A lot more happy hackers compete in it than serious competitors but even serious competitors get a great laugh out of it. Its all about discipline and how well you and your horse work as a team.

But if you do trec properly it comes in 3 stages. The first stage is like a navigation stage. You get given a map and you have to go to checkpoints along the way and for each check point you get too, you get timed and you have to do the course in a certain time. You can get penelties for going to fast or too slow but the majoirty of it is done in walk and trot and then depending on how fast you get to each checkpoint depends on how fast you take each section. The second stage is the walk and canter stage and then the third stage is the obstacle stage.

Again great fun and designed to show the partnership you have between you and your horse.

oooh dont let us treccies hear you say its not competitive..i do trec and beleive me i am ultra competitive, with the average entry fee £30-£50 and having to travel usually up to a 100mile round trip minimum we take it very seriously lol

there are about 64 obstacles and in a full trec you do 16 in a winter trec 10 usually. XWP where in worcs are you are Solihull and Swallowfield RC's will nornally put on some winter indoor trecs, the best place to get you started.....the full trecs can be up to 12kph which is 8 miles and you would have to canter...well if you wanted. i love trec..when i see some advertised i will post. keep an eye on the BHS website under trec, any BHS events will be posted there

They do it at a local yard to me but ita a pairs one, I cant convinvce any one to do it with me cos they all think their horses will refuse to do the stuff!!! It does say on the leaflet for it (the one local to me) that its just for fun and you can miss anything your not keen on. Going to keep at my dressage-loving freind for next year :lol:

Im just down the road from abbey dressage so planning a few shows there, gracelands isnt far either so go there a fair bit although dont think ive ever seen a trec comp there :(

i go to gracelands occasionally had a few jumping clinics there, do you go to lincomb equestrian? wheres abbey dressage never heard of it, your not that far from me then
