Just read on another forum that the "appaloosa horse project" has identified one of the markers for the LP gene. Not the gene itself but it will be testable to establish the presence of the LP gene.
Everyone is now waiting to see what testing facilities will start to offer the test. The test will show which spot bred but born solid equines will "colour out" in time of help distinguish spot related roaning from other forms of roan

In my simple terms.. it's for solid coloured spotted horses to determine whether they will roan out?

Some that are born solid do more than roan out, mandy has one that was born solid black/charcoal and then lost her coat and turned leopard. Some classic roan horses are also sold as spot bred so they would be able to test them now. Once they have developed the test further they will be able to test zygosity (sp?) which means telling whether they are truley homozygous.

obviously her change was pretty quick but i've known 2 year olds and yearling shed out into similar patterns.

Note to my sectret santa....... she's for sale!

Thats interesting Kizzie was quite a big interest to alot of the appy breeders as was her mum as until last years foal they seem to both be a genetic dead end for spots or characteristics

Was last years foal to a solid non spot bred?

mum is called Wearview Belle yet black mare by Amazing Technicolour out of Tiptoe Mooncoin
First foal - Kizzie by Wa Ha Dar yet black no characteristics at all no couolring out at 5yo
Second foal - Henry by wa Ha Dar Chestnut no characteristics no signs of colouring out
fourth - dont know what it came out but has no characteristics or spots by DL Southern Dream i think
Third foal - Kissie by Wa Ha Dar black really spotty loeapard spot

King is kizzie foal by a grey WB stallion he has a small amount of white of the eye and also fiant stripes on his hooves but not much also had one random white spot when he was younger but it seems to of gone now, but that might very well be from the grey or the warmblood anyway

Interesting. i do know there has been some research done that suggests that Black based horses seem to have the ability to suppress the extent of white markings (spotties and coloured) So you get more black based solid appies than chestnut based (saying that you have a solid chestnut and loud black)
