Sovereign Pretty Lady 1972 -2010

[Ambers Mum]

Tonight at 5pm Sovereign was pts after a bout of colic.

She was found my friends husband just two hours after I had been up and seen my happy girl on top form.

Sov had a wonderful varied life, she was bred to SJ in the 1970's and later was used as a broodmare before becoming a hack for a disabled woman. In 2006 my friend bought her as a novice ride but Sov was never quite that and after a year of exercising her, Karl bought her for me and she gave me the confidence I had lost so long ago.

I am so grateful to my friends and husband who were there tonight to say goodbye to this amazing horse who loved to go out for a plod around the crop fields and when at a show would forget her age and prance about like a circus pony.

I love you my sweet angel and you will be missed always xxx

Im so sorry Mandi. I cant say anything that will make you feel any better, but you gave Sov the most loving home she could have wished for. She was such a great horse and lived a long and happy life, she couldnt have asked for a better, loving family to spend her days - you gave her so much and you should be very proud of how well you did by her in her last few years.

So sorry to hear this Mandy, we lost a 37yr old pony to colic too, who'd never colicked in his life. Despite 3 injections of buscopan, the pain never went, and his gums went blue, so the decision was made by myself and colleague (owner had authorised us in absence to make a joint agreement if we ever needed to do this for her) to have him pts.

I still look at Honey and wonder if I am doing the right thing by putting her through this winter ? She is bright eyed and moving around well, and saw her get down and roll twice the other day (not colic) so I know she is able to get up and down, just doesn't canter at all in the field now, she will trot if she has to get out of way, but mooches around a lot grazing. Has a nice thick deep rug on and is happy, but a bit arthritic on right hind.

I am so sorry for your loss, my old boy went the same way, i left him after his supper and he was fine and after about an hour i had a phone call and within the next 2 hours he was pts through colic, he was 28 and we had been for a good old gallop the day before. It was the last thing i expected. know how you must be feeling and wish i could take the pain away, especially this time of year. xx

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments. She was collected this morning but because the company were running late I decided to uncover her and give her the groom I had always said I would do before she would be pts. I couldn't give her the last weekend with my girls the way we had always planned and she never got her favorite treats for her last supper but I was at least able to touch her and groom her one last time before she completely left me forever.

I am heart broken and at the moment can't see past today, I don't know what I would do if I hadn't my other ponies to keep me going.

I love this mare so much I could never imagine this ever happening this way. The vet said she looked so well and it was so sad that we couldn't save her but the cold had set it and she had given up in the end, there was nothing left to do.

I am so grateful to my friends husband who stopped and tried to save her whilst we got there, without Mark and Joanne I wouldn't have been able to say my goodbyes properly and she would have died a lone in the cold.

We just got the black and white print back for framing and I dried my heart out because I never thought it would be my last chance of a proper photo shoot with her in the summer...she got a special award at the RC for being the eldest ridden horse :(
