What is normal when it comes to full loaning? Does the owner retain the passport? I have heard that normally is the case! but what happens when the horse has jabs or need to travel, or go to shows.
Thanks
Stephanie

Passport is not proof of ownership it is a document that should stay with the horse :) Most people I know take a copy of the passport but leave it with the loaner. I didnt have Uva's passport however but I had the reassurance i could ring her owner and get passport within an hour if it needed to be produced for any reason

As Loubylou says the passport doesnt belong to the owner, it belongs to the horse so should be kept wherever the horse is kept.

Dancer is on full loan in scotland. Gillies wouldnt transport her without the passport and she has had various medical procedures (trying to get her pregnant by AI) and the loaner has gotten her vacs up to date. So the loaner needs the passport. I've got photo coppies of it all, plus the page you would sign to change ownership (to show that I hadnt signed it pre loaning) and its written in the contract that at no point does Dancer become the loaners property and she has no right to sell her on or sub loan her.

Thank you! I thought that was the case. My ponies passports go everywhere they go.

All of my loaners have the horses passport. The only time i only let them take a cope is if its LWVB, in which case they have a copy and its gets sent upon payment.

When we got Tink we had her for 3 months on loan..the owners kept her passport..(80 miles away)..when we paid for her after the 3 months we got the passport.... I paid a deposit for Cobbie and got a receipt..then 2 months later got him and his passport together on our arranged day..

Passports should always remain with the horse as it is a horse identification document, not a proof of ownership document. Some vets will not treat a horse if the person caring for the horse does not have its passport.

the passport is to be kept with the horse, even when travelling it must be taken with, also at shows or any outing and even vet appointments. a horse being "caught" travelling with out a passport will be fined up to a £1000.
someone i know found thata out the hard way

I had no idea about this!
Holly's owner has the passport and I thought as a part-loan it was the right thing to do. I guess when I go to shows I'll have to ask for her passport. Informative thread, thanks! :)

in fact i believe the passport should be even kept at the yard ,we read the rules and it was kept in a mouse proof, water proof contater ,i do know if you are out riding the passport must produced in 3 hours if you do not have it with you ,if you are stopped and asked to produce it

Never keep your passport at they yard !!!!!!!
If you get broken in to the theives have your horse and its papers also you dont need to produce the passport when you are out ridding.
The only time you will be asked to produce your passport at the yard is if defra do a spot check, and they alow you up to 1 hour to produce the passport. I know as the law states that yard owner should retain the passport, but only if the yard has some one living on the property. If not then you should produce that passport with in 1 hour of request.
