Hi All!
We have a new livery up at the yard, my friend has moved her mare a couple of weeks ago. Amber is in the same field as my two Welsh Cobs (Jakes and Taran) and my friend's little 12.2 Highland x, Bob.
Amber came into season, we went for a ride yesterday and turned her back out with the boys. Jakes and Taran aren't really bothered about her - suprisingly as Taran was a Stallion up until the age of 12 and still gets 'het up' with the other mares on the yard. I don't think he fancies Amber!
Anyhows - Bob, randy little thing, promptly mounts Amber! I am being serious here, he actually serviced her!!!! I didn't think geldings could?! Do you think he is a rig? My friends are thinking about getting the vet out to see if he is!
The foal would be a stunner though ;) Although I don't think either of my friend's would be best pleased! We have since put them in seperate fields!
Is this normal behavour? I have seen Taran mount mares (when he escaped into the other horses' field) but not actually 'do it'.
Please help! Thank you!

Hehe little ponies!
Dont worry about it, 60% of geldings retain stallion like characteristics, although Bob is gelded, he still can get erect and serve a mare, just nothing will happen
How old is Bob? Im 80% certain nothing will have happened, if he was a rig you'd have known about it by now!
Its quite normal behaviour as it can [usually] be a sign of dominance, although Bob's just probably trying it on, If in doubt i'd deffinatley get her checked, although if he's never been stallion like then id say its nothing to worry about!

Yes I have seen this behavour in him many a time before - just not with a mare (they are in seperate fields as the are the YO's horses) Bobs regularly mounts both Jakes and Taran - he is really, really playful!
Bob's is 9 years old (Passport and dentist agree) Bob is bullied by Jakes and Taran if there is food, but they seem to let him play with them!
Thanks I will tell their Mum's it *should be* ok!! I said I would have the foal if there is one :P Amber is 14.3 Welsh Cob x Irish something and Bobs is 12.2 Highland x NF!

Oh my!!!! Naughty pony.
But...............
Ross (who is 16) mounts Becky nearly every time she is in season and so did a friends other horse that was kept with them for a while even though both are geldings. They never bother with the other mare and we have just come to the conclusion Becky is a floozy as she just stands there and kinda looks like she is enjoying it!!!!!!!
I think as long as he isnt showing any other stallion traits he wont be a rig.

Geldings get fruity too, thats what I keep telling my land owner, I don't think they quite understand that just because they can't produce babies doesn't mean they don't get urges.
BC - I didn't think geldings could get a full erection? If they were to, I thought it would be the late cut stallions. I know geldings keep their stallion like behaves, as Jester does but didn't realize they can get an erection.

I keep thinking about this and I dont know all the ins and outs of it Rhea but I am assuming that once they are gelded it is kinda like a mans vasectomy and they can still 'perform'. its just that they tie up the Vas defrens??? (tubes that carry the good stuff) so they fire blanks!!!!!!?????????

Both Bob and Taran have had errections - they are both geldings - however I thought that geldings couldn't 'service' a mare (until last night lol!) Thanks guys - I think Amber is a tart and Bob's in just a naughty randy little pony! LOL! xx

I bet that was a surprise!!!
I would think he was firing blanks, so her owner shouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for that, I can see it from that point of view. :)

Gelding a horse is different to a man having a vasectomy. Gelding involves the removal of the testes, whereas vasectomy is as you described (servering of the vas defrens.
As the testes are responsible for making sperm, a gelding can't produce sperm. I believe testes are also responsible for producing testosterone too, so usually urges would be lessened.
However, the 'master' hormone secretions are governed by the brain and I would guess a mare in season would give of pheremones that would stimulate the brain to release hormones which certain parts of certain organs will react to, which explains Bob's antics, lol!
I've noticed that if female animals(mares and bitches) in season are persistant enough they can persuade castrated animals to have a go!

can someone advise me on this, the field i have a pony on loan on there is a 5yr stallion who was gelded end of march but i bought 2 ponies of that field who had moved on a week after he was gelded..the owner decided to get rid quick for some reason :( and it did serve the 6yr old mare id bought dont know if theres a poss shes in foal but i did swap her for a secA 2yr old gelding pony last week only because she was a kicker and nasty so not suitable with my kids around.....ive kept jak the gelding i bought as well and forest the ex stallion is fine with him but when i introduced legs the new gelding i swapped the mare forest cornered him ran him down he was a nightmare..3 days later i had to move legs off to another field cos forest barged through electric fence where i had made safe space for us with a shelter to get to legs run him down again he even picked him up with his teeth lifted him off the floor and swung him to one side!i was traumatised!! ive never seen behavour like it :9 but i dont understand why forests ok with jak and not legs :( maybe he was too busy serving the mare i had to notice jak ???? but now i wondering will he ever let legs back in the field because come winter i dont think i can go to 2 fieds to do feeds,i just want forest to be happy though its hes tough :( help xxxx

i would get him checked out just incase but yeah geldings can and will still cover mares, and each other, it just wont get them pregnant,
there are a few stallion type calmers out there we used Rig Calm for a bit for one at work but it made him worse, Equistro but its pricey and the top spec one, magic and nupa feed, all worked well in various ways, now he gets one from the vet which i think is just bromine but it does the job, he was getting quite hard work and tried to mount people
castrations arent like vasectomies, they take out the testicle so they cannot ejacultae or produce sperm, although mounting her and covering can cuae other problems like infectiosn in the uterus which will limit her chances of conceiving in the futrue, there is a risk of taring her vagina wall and also it will hurt her back if he covers her repaetadly

To be honest if the owners are that worried i would just get a blood test done.
Indi wasnt gelded until he was 9 years old and when hes in a mixed herd ends up with a harem of mares all fighting for his attention!(he never complains mind you!).
I have seen Indi mount and "Service" a mare and ended up having him blood tested (twice i may add because he turned in to a complete nightmare and i thought the first test had to be wrong!) it turned out he was just randy!
Anyway my vet did tell me that a Stallion / gelding can infact "rape" mares by force thus inflicting massive internal injuries and stitches but 99% of the time the mare instigates the mating hence the reason why there is usually no issue!
In the end because Indi was not a rig and just randy i ended up having the vet inject him with hormone Supressants due to him being in a mixed herd (the YO wouldnt let me seperate him from the mares) but they just made him depressed and broke my heart seeing him so down, i then found Global Herbs Rig Calm and that sorted him out straight away! and *touches wood* he hasnt tried to mount anything since!

Do you legally have to have a vet do geldings? I know there used to be people that would go round and do them cheaper but i wasnt sure they were still about. I'd thought that if a horse was gelded incorrectly then caused injury to a person or mare there would be scope for legal action?

i was told mike was'nt allowed near mares for 6 wks. (his was huge and i now know why he never got it out very often-it'd get dirty on the floor!) but even with merry 'coming on to him' hes a well behaved boy.....

Bex; Quite a few passports for foals now have sections for castration, which the vet has to sign saying they have removed both full testicles and connective tissues. If they sign this, and then it turns out the horse is a 'True' Rig, then there is course to be able to take legal action as it is dangerous to do so.
If the horse is a 'False' rig, then there isnt really anything legal that can be done to the vet as it's not their fault. :)
