I've been watching racing for years now (my grandma is to blame, she got me into it!). I'm more a jump racing fan because year after year the horses come back and you follow them and it just keeps you coming back.
I was just wondering about racing fans favourite equine stars? Here are mine:
FLAT
Lammtarra
Just the most gorgeous chestnut, not that big but stunning to see. Fell in love because of the romantic but tragic story behind his young trainer's murder, and told parents he would win the derby at 16-1. When he came storming home apparently from nowhere none of us believed our eyes and parents kicked themselves for not listening. He went on to battle to victory in big races including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, with me following every step of the day and retired unbeaten.
Dubai Millennium
A striking bay with this air about him that just set him apart. I remember him accelerating away from the field in the Prince of Wales like it was nothing. Almost became more of a favourite because we lost him so tragically to grass sickness a year after retiring to stud. As a result I've followed his progeny, like Dubawi, ever since.
JUMPS
Viking Flagship
When I was younger I loved the fact that this horse was so brave in his races and really fought all the way to the line. I have a picture of him at home absolutely flying over his fences. Just a really exciting horse to watch and one you knew would give everything for you.
Gloria Victis
Never forgotten this horse, so exciting when he won the racing post chase making it all seem so easy that they entered him in the Gold cup, where tragically he was fatally injured. I was touched by the fact that McCoy spoke of him at least a year on in an interview about how sad it was to lose him. Apparently he even appeared in his DVD. It was devastating and I'll never forget feeling like I'd been punched in the stomach when I found out what happened to him :(
Red Marauder
I loved this chestnut, at least a year before he won the National someone mentioned they were aiming there, so I backed him at 40-1 and couldn't believe it watching him fight his way home through the mud- it was an insane race that one, all sorts of things happening, horses carried out and horses running across the field, but wow, he plugged on home. Amazing heart on him. Hope everyone who had said bad things about him felt bad as he had been called some names!
Kauto Star
Got to be one of my favourites, feel lucky to have been able to watch him over the past few seasons, everyone loves to see him, hope he bounces back from the King George and puts up a good show in the Gold Cup.
