I have noticed that Kissie's thick mane sometimes gets caught up in the reins as I ride. They are rubber reins-does any one else have this problem?

When I part-loaned a cob I had the same problem. I'm guessing it wouldn't be as bad if they weren't rubber reins as the hair sort of sticks to them! The only thing I did was put an arab plait in, it would last a few days so not too much hassle.

The Friesian I ride has a long mane, and I get tangled in it badly even with leather reins. I just try to ride with my hands a little higher to keep them out of the way - she's an upper level dressage horse so I should be riding with my hands more up & together than I like to anyways once she's warmed up

I agree she would look nice plaited, Susan! But I don't know how to do it and I might **** it up again:ashamed: (at least it looks tidy now!)

Lol, mane rake and pair of scissors! That's what I use. Avoid solo comb at all costs, I had a minor disaster when experimenting with one this week! At least it has all winter to grow back! Just dont try to cut in lines, cut with the scissors held vertical and you are just snipping into it!
(I so know this is not the question, lol!)

I normally put Xanths in a running plait!
If you do pull it DONT USE SCISSORS (), use a sharp pulling comb and do it after a long ride when she is a bit hot!
Although i like Kissie with a long mane!

Scissors and normal comb always does the trick for me :D

Having a long mane is great for grabbing if they buck etc
I always put magic to one side and try not to move the reins about too much, or plait it up.

i think the rubber reins almost stick to their manes sometimes, its usually less of a problem with leather reins

Yeah I always found rubber reins quite sticky - I suppose that is the point really? I have been doing a quick running plait in Bella's mane, actually to keep her cool but it serves the same purpose. Now i've got the hang of it it only takes a few minutes

Is a running plait the same as an arab plait?

its one of these:

It looks harder than it is - its just like a french plait but along instead of down if that makes sense? you plait along the crest adding in hair in from the top as you go

That's what I call an arab plait, same thing. Dead easy when you get the hang of them although if I spend longer and get it tight it stays in longer!

ahh cool, yeah when I first tried it took ages, now i'm speedy! a good tip that i think I got from someone off here was to use bigger chunks of mane when adding in- I used to do them much smaller and neater but it never stayed in as well..

I usually put a couple of plaits in the bottom of Paddy's mane, that does the trick. I've got leather reains.

I find rubber reins get me in a tangle with free ranging cob manes!

Eurgh, one thing that really annoys me is long manes getting caught in reins! Before I got Boots I was helping out a neighbour ride an unruly welsh D with a long thick mane and it used to get in the way. I used to plait/tie the last 1/4 of mane up with plaiting bands so it kept it out of the way. I find rubber reins are sticky too.
