My mare has always has a small lump on her back but it never caused any problems, it always just looked a bit raised, almost like an insect bite. Since she started going out naked she appears to have irritated it and It has grown, I got a new numnah last week too so it may be my saddle is rubbing a bit as this new one is not wool.
This is what the lump looked like after i rode saturday, yesterday when i untacked it was bleeding a bit. I'll get her back done and saddle checked again and get the vet out. Any ideas what it is in the mean time?

Was it covered in hair before it became irritated? It could just be a wart or some type of sarcoid (there are several different types) It does sound like your new numnah may be to blame but is it possible that the flys have been at it now the weather has warmed up? If its bleeding i'd definitely ask the vet about it as if its a sarcoid and trauma/bleeding can make them grow bigger.
ETA - i've know horses develop little cysts when they have had a splinter or something in the skin. They are just the bodys way of isolating something so it doesnt cause them any problems.

I feared Sarcoid, she has a sililar looking sarcoid on the inside of her thigh that the vet said we would keep an eye on. It did used to have hair on it. I used to use a nuumed wool numnah but i suspected it was so thick it was making her sweat a lot under the saddle.
I cleaned it and purple sprayed it but i'll not ride until i get it looked at. x

I would also say it looks suspiciously like a sarcoid but it could be something as innocent as a cyst / blocked pore or something. Get it looked at just in case.

Vet came out friday, he thinks it was an infected bite, he picked at the scab and a bit of a hole emerged, he hopes that's all it is so she has topical cream and had bute but if it doesnt heal well then it may be that there was an underlying problem. Its a pretty deep hole so she has a good few weeks off to make sure its properly healed as it will only get aggitated by the saddle if I hurry.

Thanks Ladies, the vet said it may well have been a little cyst or sarcoid but he hopes it was just an infected bite as there was a bit of goo when the scab came off, its just annoying that its under the saddle. she was really flinching when he cleaned it out, because of where it is I can't put a dressing on so she is having to live in a light turn out to keep the flies away despite the lovely sunshine.
