Is anyone on here bonkers enough to tackle the great big wall??:scared:

Watching Ellen win the HOYS puissance the other night was amazing and I love her naughty mare, makes Baby look like a Saint :innocent:  I think both horses and riders are SOOOOOOooooooo brave to jump a 7'1 wall but they must have a little something missing to even consider it

I definitely 110% would! Showjumping is my ultimate equine passion, every day i miss competing and even just jumping at home over good sized fences that really make your horse work. I even miss working on strides, bounces, just the feel of a horse in the moment over the fence..
Have done a few puissances but i'd love to do something 'proper' like the major puissances at the likes of HOYS, Olympia.

One day i will get a few horses that i can bring on, go BSJA and keep going. I wont rest until i do :D

did anyone see the picture on the inside back cover of horse and hound last week, there was a picture of one of the whitaker brother doing a puissance type event bare back! the fence was huge and the horse was only i think it said 15.2!

i max out on a horse i really trust at about 1m20/30 i jumped that on Dennis a few times and the odd horse at college but the majority im not comfortable going over 1m

Sorry, but I beg to differ. I think it is a horrible event. Just think about the strain that is put on the horse's legs, its tendons especially, when it lands over that wall, even without the weight of a rider. I think it's definitely a case of the rider putting his/her own glory before the welfare of the horse.
No desire to offend, that's just my opinion.

Jill I completely agree with you about the tendon strain and I was saying that to my OH whilst we were watching it. Their fetlocks just about touch the ground when they land. I do find it amazing that the horses will actually jump it though because if they didn't want to, I'm sure they wouldn't.

I wouldnt fancy it no, but i ****** admire the riders and horses!
I hate jumping but love watching it! I watched it on TV and practically jumped it with them everytime
That Ladina B is phenominal - the way she ****** about a couple of strides before the triple bar and then just pinged over it like it was nothing

It LOOKS quite cool and you have to have a hell of a lot of guts to attempt it. However i can see the point of strain on tendons. I suppose it depends on how often they jump that height and the surface. I think the rider just has to use his/her scense.

I cannot watch that horse jump i just hate it, it has no style it shouldnt be able to jump those kinds of fences!

I do it at a reasonable level for me because it's a nice way to push my comfort zone a little, which I can forget to do fairly often.

The last day in South Africa we played. It really showed me how far Flambards had taken me - from thinking I'd be an "only dressage and cross country because I'm terrified of show jumps" rider for the rest of my life to clearing a 4'0" jump confidently - in about two years. My special boy.

I dont particularly like watching it and watch half of it with my eyes closed. The wall isnt like it was years ago, the horses cant hurt themselves if they dont jump it, it literally falls apart in a matter of seconds. Safety is very much in the forefront nowadays, goodness I remember the days of David Broome when a lot of horses were hurt then, things have changed for the better thankfully.

I have to agree that the riders have got to have some guts to do it and know that the horse is capable of doing it or they wouldnt do it.

Hah if Saf tried it she'd just gleefully canter right through the damn thing...

I'd be terrified, I don't think I'd do it. I'd hate not being able to see the other side of the jump. The horses must have so much confidence in their riders to go over them. I used to do chase me charlie on Rookie. She loved it, I'd be clinging on with my eyes pretty much closed. The highest we got came upto my chest (I'm 5ft8) so it must have been over 4ft. Not bad for a 14.1hh pony :D

gawd I remember the days when the wall was about 2ft thick and horses would get stuck on top of it! It was after Eddie Macken and [I think] Royal Lion had a terrible fall -the horse got stuck on top of the wall and came down vertically and landed on his head, fortunately he was okay- that they re-designed the wall so it was thinner and lighter and collapsed ...

and no, I wouldn't dare try puissance!!

if you think about it though a drop fence XC especially at higher levels would be a similar height on the drop side and they are expected to continue round a huge long course, the fence might only be 4ft or higher not sure on height for eventing then a three foot drop the other side the horse is still falling seven feet on the landing side

where as puissance they jump two fences a maximum of four or five round is it they do? and if they hit it it falls down
