i'm currently on a gap year & though i've been searching for a job since last year, i still haven't been successful :( so at the moment i'm volunteering in a charity shop but obviously i'm not making any money doing that!

as i have a lot of time on my hands & a weird tack cleaning obsession, do you think anyone would be interested if i started a little tack cleaning service?
i live in quite a horsey area, there's an equestrian centre literally 2 minutes down the road from me & lots of private houses with horses nearby - and i know quite a few people could think of better ways to spend their free time than cleaning tack.
obviously it wouldnt be successful enough to be a "proper job" but it might get a bit of money in (every little helps!)

do you think it would be worth doing? if so, how much do you think would be a reasonable charge for saddles/bridles?
as i think they'd be fairly local, i could collect & drop off the tack in my car, once i'd worked out how much to charge per mile for petrol.

(any other ideas to get some money coming in would be great too !! )

It maybe, though i cant imagine it would bring a lot of money in. Could you could try a test run?

As much as I dislike cleaning my tack I wouldn't pay anyone else to do it, I'm too tight!

I think a test run would be a good idea before you start spending money buying in soaps etc etc, unless like my friend you have just about every type of tack cleaning soap going! Have you thought about the cost of cleaning products?

I do a show prep type service for people and i do get the odd person who i dont deal with regualrly, most of the time its people who i ride for that ring me up and i will go down clean pull trim plait and prepare the horse for a competition but i do get the odd person who i dont know ring me up but its more during hunt season i got quite a few calls for plaiting hunters first thing in the morning, but i dont think you would get many people ringing for tack cleaning

I wouldn't pay someone to clean my tack as I like to do it myself and I certainly wouldn't allow a "stranger" to take my tack away, it would have to be done on site so to speak under my supervision, which would then defeat the object as if I am there watching, I may as well just do it myself

Personally i wouldnt pay anybody to clean my tack. and ditto Tiaki^^ i wouldnt allow anyone to take my tack away to be cleaned. I dont think you would make much money out of it and it would prob all go on buying the tack cleaning products anyway because their not exactly cheap x

Every inititiave is a good to start to go around and introduce yourselve everywhere you can. I would say: "Go!" You never know who you are going to meet. Before you go around make a list of your other qualities. Perhpas someone needs help with work you didn't think of before. If you have an enthousiastic story about yourselve why and when and how you must be succesful in finding clientele.
What are you going to do after your gap year? Just being curious,...
Good luck!
