Belle has been put on Steroids for two weeks only problem is that they have a possible side effect of making her more prone to laminitis. Any advice for a newbie owner on what I can do to prevent this happening to my knowldge she has never had lami.

why is she on steroids? and what kind
some types of steroids can trigger lami but it does depend on the type of steroid how it is administered and the concentration
we have a horse that quite often is given predinsolone which is apparently a steriod and he is given it for allergic reactions, this is something that can be fed long term when he has a reaction where as the injections cannot be a long term soloution as they can trigger lami

Oh thats reassuring :D Belle has been put on it for ??? allergic reaction (its a long story thought it was sweetitch, then bacterial infection, then ringworm and now an allergic reaction to something !! I have a thread about it all) she's on Prednisolone 5mg tabs x120 a day for 6 days and then every other day for a week. Certainly seems to be helping we're on day 4 and she is less itchy. Just worried that on top of everything else she may get lami

ours isnt on them long term he gets them as and when he gets a reaction, because they are so pricey at his worst he looked like this but within 24hrs they were totally gone where as with the jab its like an hour

i think the risk is very low for lami with preds, he was given 100 2x day to being with then nocked it down to 80 as advised by the vet but found out he didnt need them all the time and just give him 100 if he has another reaction, but we seem to be controlling them really well and what ever it was seems to not bother him now, ****** fiddly to count out though!

God bless him that must drive him crazy - do you know what triggers it ??
Tell me about it - yeh they are fidderly especially when OH comes in and start talking to you mid count and you have to start all over again  twice he's done that this week i'm going to kill him !!
Not had the vets bill yet so don't know how much its all going to cost !!

they actually do not perster him at all or dont seem to, you can poke and prod them and everything isnt fussed,
we cut out lots of parts of his diet and we think we have narrowed it down to one mix he so far hasnt had any new reactions for the past three weeks or so, but he is a stallion and is also no longer collecting or covering, im quite interested to see if he flares up again when he starts covering again
i think the vet said they are about £30 for a tub, so pricey to maintain them on,
have you tried cavalesse if she has sweet itch? we have a pony that is awful with it but this really really helped her out a lot and she actually started to grow a mane for the first time ever

Well that will beat the usual "I've got a headache" excuse - "sorry I'm allergic" - will have to remember that one !!!!!!!!!!!:evilgrin:
No I haven't tried Cavalesse to be honest we've been really lucky until now - she wears a Demeulankamp rug 24/7 and that has kept her clear - its just the last month - but will look at Cavalesse, as this may all turn out to be an allergy to the midges - just waiting for the results of the culture to confirm or refute the ringworm diagnosis.
I'm not thinking about the bill - big gulp - thank god she's insured and they've confirmed we can claim.

hmmm..your horse has really been in the wars lately...well until you know what is exactly wrong i cant advise anything without possibility of wasting money...
so best bet is to see if there is anything new in feed (or even something old) thats caused it, and might be a good idea to seek a second vets opinion. you shouldnt upset your current vet...they cant get it right all the time afterall (i know all too well the damage of getting only one opinion can be)

No I wouldn't want to upset him the vet has been fantastic and is really trying to get to the bottom of the problem - i'm a nurse so i know that the first diagnosis is not always the right one and alot of treatment is trial and error !!
We are just waiting for the cultures to come back but the steroids are really helping Belle is far less itchy and the sores are consequently healing.
My only concern now is the risk of lami with the steroids

thats understandable, but its still an option to take into consideration. maybe if you did it in association with your current vet?
yea, i'm always cautious about steriods because of the negative effects they contain. but in small doses it shouldnt cause any problems...its after the course that you should be thinking about.
i would take a look at some stuff for afterwards to prevent any repeat's...
