Not sure if this is the right place to post or not.

Dose any one know much about the passport stuff.
Apparently a local yard owner near me has just been fined £5000.00 per horse for having horse's in livery and not having the passports for them.
The passports were kept with the owners not the livery yard. I know alot of people that would have a problem with leaving thier passport at a yard myself included.

How I would stand as I rent stables an grazing but the yard isnt managed you just pay the land owner and left to get on with it. There are about 6 stables I have two my friend has two and another girl rents one aswell. There is no livery service, maintanace or any thing it's effectivley renting a yard and field like you would rent land off a council or some thing. The land owner is not horsey at all and would only realise if a horse is ill if it was down and couldnt get up. He dose run a business off the same land but it's a mchicanic shop still not live stock related, and dosent live on the land either. The only person that handles my horses, checks them and is thier sole carere is me. Also I have enough problems trying to catch the land owner to pay rent, so if he held my passport I proberbly would never see it again, and I dont think he would want the responcibility either.

the passports should be with the horse, they are not proof of ownership so if your on a yard the yard should have the passports, i think if someone were to approach you at your rented yard then they would expect you to produce the passport and if not would probably fine you, if you didnt want to keep your passport there understandaly, maybe keep a photocopy there just incase which im sure would be better than nothing if you were asked to produce paperwork

Surely they can't expect you to keep the passport there if no-one is even there? Why not just tie it round the horses neck and leave the gate unlocked for thieves?!

At my old yard the owner used to keep hold of the original passport but the yard had photocopies. Now I'm at a private yard my passports are both at home.

As you rent land, as opposed to keeping your horse at a livery yard, then I think you should keep the passport.

On a livery yard, they have some responsibility for the care of the horses. Even on DIY livery the yard staff would step in if a horse was injured whilst the owner wasn't around and this is why this is different.

Our yard don't keep the passports, but do require owners to provide them with a photocopy to prove that horses on their premises have a passport.

The passport is supposed to be kept with the horse, as it's not proof of ownership just proof that the horse is registered and is who it says they are.
Although I have to agree it's an extremely shady area, because people do use passports as signs of ownership and some people will follow that even though legally it's not proof. It's probably worth having a discussion with the yard owner about it, and see if you can find some where to keep the passports which means it's nearby the horse but not easily accessed or found.

I will ring trading standards and ask as there is no way I am leaving passports at the yard to be stolen.

Well have spoken to Defra and Trading Standardards and dont need to keep passport at yard so it will stay at home safe.
But this is only because I rent a feild and stable and it's not a livery yard and has no staff or any one living on site.

If they do come calling though I have an hour to go home and get it.
