[Hannibal]

This morning my beautiful pony was put to sleep, aged 38 years.

We got the call from the YO this morning to say that he was colicing. We rang the vet and rushed down to the yard. When the vet arrived he said examined him and said that he had either twisted his gut or had a tumour and there was nothing that we could do.

He went to sleep peacefully with the people who loved him.

He was a truly special pony and I feel privileged to have known him and have so many memories with him. I just hope he enjoyed the last 8 years.


My sweetheart, I would have gone to the end of the earth and back for you. Stay with me forever. xx

Oh no!! I'm so sorry. I know it was a really good age, but still so unexpected really. At least he was fit and well and very happy right up until the end, except for his last day, which I guess is what we would all wish for our horses. If only they would live as long as we do. RIP Ivan xxxx

What a lovely long life he had, which is testament to how you must have looked after him when he came to you.

Thank you all for your kind words, they mean so much.

I'm feeling very empty at the moment, I keep expecting to see his little face over the stable door. His best friend, Guy, seems to be ok. He was very upset just before while the vet was looking at him but went quiet when Ivan had gone. It's strange how they just seem to understand.

I am so sorry for your loss.. I know no words can really help or change anything but I know I found comfort in knowing that others truly understood how it felt when I lost my old lad, and that there were people I could talk to and lean on through those difficult times.. RIP Ivan, you beautiful little man.. It won't change things but you can see the love and bond between you just from these photos, what a lucky pony to have found you for his final years xx

You're right Welly, it's comforting to know that you're not alone.

I really consider myself to be lucky to be able to give him those last years, he was one of those characters that could leave a lasting impression on everyone he met; normally by smashing is nose into your face!
