I got approached at my field today, asking if i wanted to sell Xanthe and how old she was ect.
Silver Van with 'Tree Specialists' along the side. 2 Youngish (20's) lads in it.
I have a reg no if anyone spots anything similar/suspicious.

A traveller approached me one day and asked me questions about Vinny to do with his age and racing ability.

3 months later we are firm friends and I trust nobody to look after Vinny better.

Don't tar them all with the same brush. This guy puts his animals' welfare miles before his own.

I don't think its a case of tarring anyone with the same brush. Horses do get stolen and we should all be vigilant and networking helps to remind us.

Apparently the spate of thefts during horse fair weeks at places like Appleby and the one I went to in Warwickshire are very often caused by locals who take advantage of the fact there are lots of gypsies around so they can be blamed and nobody will suspect locals!

Tracey, yes it's right to be careful, but I don't see what is so suspicious about two men in a van. That in itself is not suspicious behaviour.

I think its more the fact that people are now very careful due to quite a lot of thefts in the past 3 years have all started with men going about in vans picking on people and following them.

We were hit several times with "horsey men" pretending to be buisness men in the equine world, when infact they were just filthy, scrubby little thieves.

There will always be an effect of 'tarring' because there have been so many thefts that people are now careful no matter what. Im sure if someone was mugged in a supermarket, not everyone would happily waltz back into the shops, as they'd be scared someone else will do it, they just dont know who.

We are very suspicious of anyone unknown (men, women or youths) that are seen 'lurking' near the yard. Since that spell last year of people taking pics of horses and the concern being that horses would be stolen for order, security was increased at our yard at the time as several men were spotted taking pics. Since then the YO has had 2 incidents with 2 of her horses, 2 weeks in a row when neither the vet nor police could find a logical explanation for their 'cuts' !! We will therefore continue to be suspicious which helps to keep us vigilant.

To be honest, I wouldn't know a traveller from a non-traveller unless they pulled up in a caravan and told me that they were travellers!! So I don't care who they are, they just need to keep away from our horses :)

It's funny how travellers have got such bad names.
We've always had some staying every now and again on the common by us since I was little, and all of them have been nothing but lovely. There were some this summer, and when we took shauny and william past we got talking a good few times about each others horses, they did like the look of shauny as a cart horse but I can say he stayed safely in his field - so not every single traveller is out to steal your horse just because they start talking to you about them.
There are those out there who do ruin it for everyone which is a real shame.
