I use rubber tubs rather than a bath, they get emptied and filled up every day adn scrubbed.
I have one field with a bath, I scrub that out once a week when they are in there.
Hate nothing more than dirty water troughs!!!!!

I will be shocked if anyone doesnt.
If you are happy for your horse to drink out of a mucky, dirty bucket, then you shouldnt hesitate to drink from it either.

I hate having filthy water buckets, they're horrid. No one wants to drink stagnant water, so why would horses?

I do. I try to do it once a week but because of the rota I work I usually do it when ever I can.
I don't to it everyday, but usually when it is looking mucky of the green stuff starts appearing. I like to see a clean bucket, after all I wouldn't give him "green" water in his stable.

Ive heard some ppl say that horses prefer there water slightly mucky, when I empty my tubs and put clean water in them my horses all come take a drink, the cleaner the better id say

Seeing as Spock drinks it so quickly, didn't get very dirty but I scrubbed/rinsed it out twice a week. When he had the self filling one, I did that once a week (took it in turns with the other girl in my field).

This is one thing we were always told in the riding school where I worked. If you would not drink it then don't expect the horse too. We used to have "helpers" who would try to skip certain duties (like cleaning water buckets, they would just top up). It used to "scare them into shape" when we told them if you expect the horse to drink that havwe a slurp yourself.

I actually do this  Sometimes ours looks dirty but if you take the water from the top where the horses do, it is fresh and I always test it (that is me being a crazy scientist for you!!)
If it looks dirty though and I wouldn't drink it, it gets cleaned and scrubbed and re-freshed :)

I mentioned this a while ago somewere else, not many did.
I notice if not cleaned out, you get little red worms in their water but they said they don't do any harm to the horses, even if this is true I still would not like my horse drinking them.
The amount of pidgins pooing in my water is unbelievable

We have a clean stream!
BTW, does anyone else use a fishing net to get bits out of thei horse's water bucket?
Yeah I do, mainly the day after I've cleaned it, it ends up with lots of leaves etc so I hock them out.

We clean them all every day, the five who are out 24/7 get theirs emptied, scrubbed and filled every morning then refilled in the evening before we go home(sometimes re-emptied and scrubbed aswell depending)
Every field water gets emptied and scrubbed each day and the automatic waterers have any shavings fished out after mucking out, when we get over enthusiastic with chucking the banks up! They are cleaned fully as and when but usually every 3 days or so.

We have 5 automatic troughs, but very rarely, if ever have been cleaned out. However Harmony usually has a bucket which I scrub out every 3 days.
The horses drink from them happily and have been there 5 years but have never got ill, so i dont see what the problem is. In the wild they would be drinking from whatever water they could find anyway

When my sister had her other hors ewe used to share a field. There was a pond at the end (natural spring), and the horses would always drink out of the before the water bucket.

I clean ours out when it's almost finished just before i fill it up again which is usually about once a week, but i'll scoop any bugs or leaves out of it daily.
Like others have said, if you wouldnt want to drink out of it why should your horse.

At my old yard, were the water trough was under tree, they hung netting up so the leaves fell into the netting and not the trough. I though it was a good idea.

I do mine weekly/every 10 days in the spring/summer/autumn because it gets green and leafy etc but have to say in the winter I don't really bother becuase it creates a bit of a mess where it is plus they normally have access to buckets on the yard because their stables are left open during the day so it just doesn't seem as important. Buckets in the stable get changed daily, twice if he's in 24/7 and scrubbed weekly.

I clean our troughs out as often as possible. I have to say they do need doing at the moment, as I can't do it, but I suspect my friend will do it next week when she gets back from her holiday. I love the look of clean troughs.

I once cleaned the one that the horse I part-loaned had. It was MINGIN!'!! I don't think anyone else had ever bothered! I think when it's my own horse I'll check on it a bit more and clean it.

Yes we do. We have plastic baths. I or my friend tend to clean every week or so. Check it every day and fill up when needs.
I was utterly shocked to find a dead rat in it one day!!! It was very scrubbed out when we found that! Must of gone in for a drink and couldn't get out! EWWWW!!! Must of only happened in the space of a few hours from checking the horses in the morning and then in the evening!!!

I always clean the water trough that is in their when it gets dirty surprisingly it stays very clean for ages. (I also clean it out if the dog has had a drink from it)
If they move fields i clean it out before they come in.

Stable water gets scrubbed out everyday and fresh water given. For the field troughs, they get cleaned out once a week thoroughly but checked twice per day to remove any "floaters"

Harvey's field has a pond. But I clean out the water drinker on his stable regularly.

I scrub the stable buckets & refill every day when they are in at night. The field buckets get scrubbed & changed every other day unless they look yuk for any reason... have been known to scrub & change them 3 times in a day when a pigeon has poo'd in the buckets!

How often would you guys think I'd need to clean an automatic water drinker and what with? (For when I get my own ned!)

Not sure as I've never used a automatic one? is there like a tap for the old water to drain away?

You mean a plug? I can't remember, it's been a while since I've looked at one and my internet is being a complete idiot at the minute.
Spockky boy
17th September 2009, 07:39 PM
I just would just pull the float aside empty it out (may have to do this with a bucket as not all auto ones have a plug) and srub it with a brush, allow it to fill up and then drain away/use bucket. Once its clean enough untie float and allow it to fully fill up.
Thats a really bad explaination but I hope it makes some sense?

I'm pretty sure there's a way for the water to drain out of the drinkers at the farm I'd be going to, so that makes it a lot easier

I do not have a water trough in my field, most of us have water containers we fill each day, it has come about as most people have individual paddocks, the main shared fields have troughs, and even though we are not in an individual paddock, share with one other, there is no trough, so the containers/buckets get washed about once a week, or when needed
