Can you remember the first time you fell off a horse???

What were you doing? Was it your fault of the horses?

Mine - I was about 11 and on a group hack and my horse bolted down a hill towards a huge gate I was that scared he was going to jump it I 'bailed out':lol: I got straight back on and all was well again.

I guess I had been lucky till then I had ridden since I was 6 ish and had never come off until that point a few close calls but always managed to stick.

So come on what was yours like :)

I think mine was off a 13.2 chestnut mare called folly, we were doing trotting without stirrups which i hated anyway, i tensed up and gripped and she went into canter and i tensed up even more and came off the side, really hurt my coccyx!! But it was my fault  and i still hate no stirrup work!!

i was 14 when i first fell off!!

i was jumping a pony called Bonnie, she was jumping the jumps but the poles were very scary and she was clearing them by a mile!!

She came round and totally lept this one jump it was only like a foot high!! and i got thrown totally up her neck and slid round her neck hung upside down for a second before losing my grip and rolly polying away from her. She stopped came over and starting sniffing me!! LOLOLOLOL

i was fine just a bit dizzy from the rolling!! i got back on a jumped it again!!!

I was about 4, on a lead-rein hack at our friends trekking centre. We'd taken a shorter route and waited to meet the rest of the group, the pony put his head down to graze as I bent down to stroke his neck and I just kept going, slid down his neck and landed on my bum. No harm done but the lad leading me was mortified!

Mine was when I was twelve on a mystery ride to the forest. I followed some other riders who decided to jump a ditch, got left behind and fell off!

Not sure if this was my first fall or not but its the first one I remember. I was about 6 and at Thornton show on my little shetland, my mum had gone off to do a class on Mister so I decided to go for a little ride round the show ground, there's a little bridge and pathway there that takes you over to where working hunter is and there's a few practice jumps (they were only tiny). So I lined my shetland up for one of them and she was going really well until she decided to do a dirty stop. Cue me doing straight over her head, bridle and all and ended up having done 180 degrees and facing my shetland with her bridle in my hands. No surprise that my shetland did a runner and was caught by a lovely lady on a big horse, and her friend just before she got to the bridge. They helped me put her bridle back on and somewhat ashamed, with an extremely sore backside from landing on the jump I walked back to my trailer and waited for my mum to return. Never did tell her why I couldn't sit properly for a few days.

Mine was when I was about 8 on a pony called Micki, was trotting and lost a stirrup then just kind of slid off as we went round the corner. It didn't hurt but I remember being very red!

I was about 9 I think. I was having a go on my sisters pony, he was a real live wire, only 13.2 bless him! We were in the woods and I lost control, he decided to have a good old gallop and before I knew it we were at the end of the track and about to go onto the road, I lost balance and landed in a heap of muddy leaves, he took himself home!

No-one was hurt

I must have been about 7 or 8. It was on a pony day. I'd tacked up the pony myself and didn't realise I'd tightened the girth sufficiently. I was having my first go at canter and as we struck off in the corner the saddle slipped over. I clung on for a short time and then gravity got the upper hand!

I ended up sat on my bump in the indoors school covered with sawdust stuff (these were the days before hi tech surfaces!)

Mine (I think) was on a RS horse called Lucia doing lead rein clear round jumping, in fairness the RS should have never let me do it seeing as I'd had about 4 lessons before hand and could only just do a rising trot  but I did anyway, and horse had trotted over most of the teensy jumps then decided to do a half proper jump over a little upright and splat off came Melly! xx

I was about 10, say. Was about my 4th time cantering and that time i was doing it without any help, halfway round the school the pony tripped, i lost a stirrup and could not hold on. I knew i was going to fall so i bounced off by myself.
I mother happend to be watching and to my embarresment came running to me!! Tbh, it was surprisingly better than i though my first fall would be!

The nicest thing though was that the sweet little coblet came running back to me and it was so sweet apparently! I used  her soo much.

Mine was on my second or third canter lesson.

I cantered down the long side of the school quite happily on one rein but when I changed the rein the riding school pony decided he would prefer to buck rather than canter.

I managed to sit the first one... and the second... but that unbalanced me enough me to make come tumbling off on the third one!!

I wasn't seriously hurt but was a bit sore for a few days. I think my pride was hurt more than anything, lol

Luckily since then I have become much better at sitting bucks :p

Mine was in my 3rd canter lesson. I was petrified of cantering anyway and the stirrup leather broke and I went falling to the ground after it. I got straight back on and had another go - However it actually helped! I had been dreading my first fall and once it had happened I began to relax.

Fantastic horse though. He just stopped once I had come off and stood there until I picked myself up and brushed myself off.

Mine was on my sisters horse - a huge chestnut called Chester. I was about 14 (hated horses) but jumped on board, not hat, no fear. Thought I could jump but the horse bailed out and i went flying over the fence. Shattered my chin!

I did not get on another horse untill I was 33!

I remember I was on holiday, and was only about 6 at the time. I went out for a ride on this little shetland pony, and the lady who took me had forgotten to tighten his girth - seeing as shetlands have got such round bellies it started slipping pretty quickly, we were walking along and I thought my saddle had been slipping but didn't say anything, until suddenly I was lying on the floor lol. It didn't hurt and I was fine to get back on, and once she'd done the girth up there was no problems :P.

I was eight and I remember as time went on I became one of the better riders of the kiddies group LOL and so the instructor insisted putting me on this pony called Tara who was known for being the spitfire of the yard! I was nervous and remember saying 'reallyyyy??' in a doubting tone hahaha. Anyways for the first time ever we were all allowed to canter together around the school and this little madame of a pony just bronced and bronced! I remember closing my eyes and when i opened them i was on my sore little arse. The pony was brought back to me with the saddle halfway up its neck!! hahahahaha! I was put back on the very same pony 4 days later :p and then had her for my 'Pony for a day'. Lol

I was about 13 and taking the ponies to the field bareback. We had to go through an alley with one of those rails on opposite sides that you zigzag through.. going through that on a pony is bad enough, but I was also leading another! I'd always remembered to lift my knees up but this time they weren't high enough and I smacked my knee off one of them and fell into a bunch of nettles!!

Not sure that REAAALLY counts though.. the next time was a few years later. I was on the most difficult, lazy, stubbornest horses (isn't here now thank God), and he cat-leaped a jump when I hadn't been jumping long, I went straight onto his neck, slid round so I was underneath and clinging on with my knees and arms around his neck, then eventually I let myself drop!

I think it was when i was about 4 and my pony was being naughty... i was cantering around the arena and at that age your not exactly the most balanced... lol and she spooked sideways.. and i didn't go with her lol... i think that was the first time.. but it probably wasn't! I have had a ridiculous amount of falls... i definitley belive in the saying "your not a good rider until you have fallen off at least 100times!" or however it goes.. im on about 87! lol

I was 46 (2 Years ago) - It happened to me on my second ever riding lesson - Horse went into canter  and I had no idea what to do so I gripped with my legs as I didn't want to fall off !! As a result horse got faster and faster and eventually unsuprisingly I fell off - Got back in the saddle immediately on the advice of instructor, I was in a bit of pain as I trotted round but was more embarrassed than anything :o. I got a shooting pain in my back when I got off, but drove home, even stopped to collect the sunday papers !!. When home got in the bath as I was covered in mud from the fall but OMG when I came to get out sheer agony,:eek: OH had to carry me to the car and take me to A&E. Turned out I'd broke my pelvis it cost me six weeks in hospital, 6 months off work (every cloud has a silver lining !!) and lots of confidence issues if a horse did anything much more than walk - pathetic I know but I was just so scared.

But here I am 2 years later with my own horse - who'd have thought it aye !!??

Thanks thats nice of you and no I couldn't believe it either !! - have to say my OH wasn't best pleased when I said I wanted to ride again but my feeling was if i'd smashed a car he wouldn't have said I shouldn't drive again and it wasn't the horses fault anyway:

Mind you I was scared stiff when I did ride again I can tell you and stayed that way till I came off again and it didn't hurt !!

Mine was off a 12.2hh called Patience at the riding school when I was about 11.

She bolted down the indoor school and slammed the brakes on at the end...I didn't and she lost me over her shoulder! Then stood looking at me with the 'How'd you get down there' look on her face!

mine was at the riding school, hadn't been cantering very long, pony got a bit speedy round the corner and i lost my balance and came out the side door lol

I wasn't that old and decided i didn't like the pony anymore and really didn't want to get back on! I'm surprised i've made it this long riding, back then any fall or near fall would have me in tears! hehe!! x

The first horse I ever fell off was called Bonzo. Was out on a hack with the riding school and when we had a canter, he got really excited and bronked. I flew off and landed on my bum but all I cared about was where my new whip landed! Good times!!

I was 4 and riding my pony bareback in the field. She did one of those full body shakes and I came off. I landed funny and broke my arm :( put me off riding for a while, mostly because of how scared my mum had been but I was back on again once the cast came off.

I was riding Jane Grovers pony Shandy. A little liver chestnut pony. We were in the back paddock and the girls (Jane G, Mandy, Jane H and Mary) had built some jumps. I'd never really ridden much at this point but Jane let me have a ride on Shandy. Then they convinced me to go over a jump. First time I did it really well and enjoyed it, by a fluke I went nicely with the pony. 2nd time no such luck I was out the side door and landed heavily on my shoulder, dislocating it in the process. Seriously painful. Dad made it worse by rubbing linament on it but rubbing it in too hard and burning me. Took months for the joint to heal and sometimes gives me grief 44yrs later!
