I'm not quite sure what it is about my horses? They always get poorly on the weekends!

I brought all the horses in in a bit of a rush last night as I was due to see potential new man, as usual Bridie was last to come in, as she is not allowed much turnout on grass, so lives in the round pen most of the time.

When I got to the pen, Bridie was lying down, which I thought was a bit odd. I got her up and bought her in, removed her rug (which was a medium weight amigo and waterproof) and popped her leg wraps on. Then she started to crumble into a heap again, very odd. My friend took a look too, and we wondered if she had colic, but she had gurgly sounds, but she did feel very cold.

At this point I called the vet out and called potential new man to ask him to come to the yard instead. (brownie point number 1) (No time for a shower or prettifying myself!!!!)

Potential New Man arrived at the yard and bless him, asked if there was anything he could do. (brownie point number 2)

The vet then turned up and was shocked at the state she was in. (by this time she was wearing a fleece and had a heavyweight stable rug thrown accross her, but was still down.) she wouldn't eat etc. and her nickname is miss piggy!

The vet took her temp. and it was 35  Poor love. Vet PR'ed her, all normal there, and could find nothing else wrong, so diagnosed hypothermia, but took a faecal sample for a worm egg count and bloods to check anyway. Worm egg count was fine, bloods all normal.

so we rugged her with her heavyweight combo over her fleece and made her a hot tea (which she hardly touched) Potential New man earned more browie points at this stage as he was holding her for the vet to take blood etc while I sorted that out!

We left her at half 9 down and I went back to check her at midnight and she was still down and not eating. The vet had said there was nothing more we could do and it was just a waiting game. Her breathing looked a little laboured, I gave her some fresh dry hay (she normally has soaked hay) and she nibbled that a little, but stopped quickly. I left her a half one.

I have to say that this morning I was half expecting to find her gone. But much to my delight she was stood with her head over the door :D She's eaten most of the dry hay, but not her tea or any soaked hay, and her extremities felt warmer. I gave her more hay and have left her in for the day.

She ate her breakfast this morning with a little encotagement, but hopefully she is on the mend now. She is still heavilly rugged and I will check her temperature again in a minute before deciding whether or not to slowly reduce her rugs down.

So, once again, It's fingers crossed for Bridie x

how strange - what would cause that then? just getting too cold? could she maybe have a virus which has made her a bit run down? x
