View Full Version : Some really sad news .. Tiffany :(

I'm only just posting this as i'm pretty upset but on Friday i had to have Tiffany put to sleep.
Tiffany was 34 and was my first pony...my 13th birthday present. We were together for 16 fantastic years and i miss her so much now :crying:
She taught me everything and was the best first pony anyone could wish for in my eyes.
It was completely unexpected and within an hour of me going up to the field i had got the vet out and the decision had been made. She was just staning there cold and weak and strugling to breathe. I managed to get her into the shelter where she layed down straight away. The vet came and took her temperature which was very low and he said she looked to have sinisitis (sp) but because of her age it had caused her to shut down. Tiff had a dodgy heart anyway and this wasn't helping. She was in such a state!
The vet put her to sleep and it was really peaceful. I've never seen a horse be put to sleep and even though it was awful i did feel some relief that Tiffany was finally out of pain and no longer suffering when she went.
I'm still finding it hard to get the final memory of her in distress out of my head and i'm re-running the days events over and over again in my head. I didn't think it would effect me in this way at all but it really has made me very emotional and not just in the normal sad way. I feel quite low at times and i'm just hoping that with time the good memories might take over the bad.

Oh I'm so so sorry. You gave her 16 wonderful years and she looked fab for her age. She may have been distressed at the end but that pales into insignificance compared to all the happiness you gave her. Big big hugs xxx

Oh no how awful for you hun.. Please try to take strength from knowing that you did the absolutely right thing for Tiff by allowing her to go with her dignity and with you by her side, knowing how very much she was loved.. And 34 is a wonderful age, obviously goes a long way to show how well looked after she was through her life with you..
As you had her through your teenage years you must have so many lovely memories of all you did together.. I promise you in time the pain will lessen and you WILL remember these times and smile.
RIP Tiffany, you gorgeous girl - go play with my boy now - no more pain xxx

Oh my god I'm so sorry to hear this. You did the best thing you could for her though, she died peacefully with little stress - so remember that you did the right thing for her right until the end, and that's the best any owner can ever do.
RIP Tiffany.

Ive only just read your post, I am so sorry. I suppose we never know how the loss of a horse will affect us till it happens but as you and Tiff had so many years together it will make it even harder.
We all handle berevment in different ways and im sure the way you feel now is quite normal although it will feel like you are alone in your thoughts.
All I can offer you is peace of mind that you did right by your girl, in time the good times will fade out the fact she was PTS and all images that went with that.

Oh ******* hell. I saw the title and prayed it wasnt Tiffs. I have always adored this beautiful little mare, she reminds me so much of Scottie and she just seemed to have this brilliant spark in her.
Im sorry if this message is no help either, im devastated for you Lucy, i really am :(
I really commend you for acting so fast and doing the best for her, you've always been such a warm caring person to your horses, i saw that in the 5 minutes i met you. I am so awfully sorry for you losing Tiffs. I just have to say that she was one hell of a lucky pony to get the life she has had with you, and to reach 34 is an achievement in its self
You have done the best thing any owner would have, i really hope that the bad memories are replaced soon. It will take time and there will be hard times, but.. it gets easier to cope with gradually. She will always be with you, and as hard as it is having to say goodbye, you are NEVER alone. She will be there all the way along. Losing them never gets easier, no matter how many times you see it.. you just have to hold on to the fact you know your doing the best thing for them, even if it isnt the best thing for us..
She went with dignity and didnt suffer, and im certain that is all she would have asked for

Thank you everyone for your such thoughtful messages. I've been crying alot tonight reading the replies which is not like me at all. I'm one of those 'keep it to yourself' types. I've been and got some photos of Tiffany to look at to try and get those images into my head to replace the bad ones. I feel slightly better after having a cry but it still hurts.

So sorry for your loss, she looked like a lovely pony. As the others have said you did the right thing and while that doesnt make it any easier now once the initial grief has passed you'll be able to look back on your time with her and know that you gave her the best possible life right to the end xx

I am so so so sorry, im honestly shocked to hear this and really do feel so awful for you.
I even told my mum your story about having her so long and everything, it really is touching, you have done so much with the little pony that is tiffany (looked through your old pictures in the younger days!) and she has had such a fabulous life! and she seemed such a charactor, just cant believe it and im so sorry for your loss. Another thing, i really admire you for just letting her live out the rest of her days, i think thats brilliant and a lovely thing to see when owners do this, and you are one of them owners. A fab one!
She was absolutely, well and truly loved and i hope you can find comfort in that, and the fact that she is no longer in pain or suffering in this cold winter weather. She'll always be remembered, try and think of the good times x

Aww, really sorry :(
You've probably come accross this before, but I think its nice, even though its probably not going to be any comfort at all right now....
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and
our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing:
they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly, she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into those trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

I am so sorry - I've had my first pony for nearly 20 years and it breaks my heart to even think of a day when she's not around. She was very lucky to have you as her owner and I hope it gets easier for you with time, xxx

I'm sure she wasn't as distressed as you think. Animals don't think about what's happening to them, they just get on with it, so although she must have been uncomfortable I'm sure she wasn't in real distress.
It's a sad fact that horses often give us very little warning or time to prepare ourselves. But the good side of that is that they do not suffer for long.
It must be a terrible loss after all these years.

Oh Lucy :(
I am so, so very sorry :( You poor thing, BUT you did what was right for your lovely girl, Tiffany.
Here are two poems that helped me through loosing my horse last year. They made me cry a lot, but their messages are right XXXX
GOODBYE
With heavy hearts and a tear in our eyes,
after all these years, we must say goodbye.
Please understand, we've done all we could,
if there was anything we could do, you know we would.
I'm sitting right here, gently rubbing your ears,
while I talk to you softly, trying to hold back the tears.
The memories you gave us, we'll never forget,
especially the ones of the day we all met.
One last hug and one last kiss,
you have no idea how much you'll be missed.
To look into your eyes this one last time,
you tell me it's ok...you know it's your time.
Close your eyes now and go to sleep.
We'll pray to the Lord, your soul he'll keep.
Go in peace now, our good friend,
We'll stay right here with you, until the end.
Dream of that special day and time,
when we'll meet at the Bridge and all will be fine.
We'll run and play side-by-side,
with a soft warm feeling deep down inside.
Your memory will live on in each one of us..
You'll always be number one to all of us.
Have a safe journey through the night.
I promise when you awake, you'll be in God's light.
So with heavy hearts and tears in our eyes,
just for now my friend....we say goodbye.
John Quealy
GOD'S FOAL
I'll lend you for a little while
My grandest foal, He said,
For you to love while she's alive
And mourn for when she's dead.
It may be one or twenty years,
Or days or months, you see.
But, will you, till I take her back,
Take care of her for me?
She'll bring her charms to gladden you,
And should her stay be brief,
You'll have treasured memories
To bring solace in your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay,
Since all from earth return.
But, there are lessons taught on earth
I want this foal to learn.
I've looked the wide world over
In my search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes
With trust I have selected you.
Now will you give her your total love,
Nor think the labour vain,
Nor hate Me when I come
To take her back again?
I know you'll give her tenderness
And love will bloom each day.
And for the happiness you've known
Forever grateful stay.
But should I come and call for her
Much sooner than you'd planned,
You'll brave the bitter grief that comes
And someday understand.
All the love in the world Lucy XXXX

She looks just like my little Susie.
Unfortunately we don't always get much warning, but the positive side of that is that she didn't suffer, or linger.
You must have a huge hole in your life. You will move on and remember the good times, but you will have to grieve, so don't expect to feel better straight away.
