Some of you may have read my post on the general equstrian bit about an alleged owner wanting their horse back after they've given it away to someone. They have now asked £1000 for the horse (even though its not theirs) please could you give me an opinion of your valuation.

15hh 17 year old black standardbred gelding. Doesn't look like a typical trotter, is quite shapely and good looking. Only conformation fault is slightly pigeon toed. Has trained as a pacer as a 4 year old but never raced as was too nervous.

GOOD POINTS

Beautiful natured with people, is regularly handled by 6 year old who can put his halter on, lead him in from the field and groom him. Easy to ride in the menage for any rider. Good with farrier/vet. Is sound and has no old injuries.

BAD POINTS

Horrible with other horses, cannot be turned out in company as will attack any others, at previous yard permanently scarred and lamed 2 horses.
Has severe COPD, cannot be in barn stabling, can only eat haylage/soaked hay, cannot have any type of bedding other than mats.
Needs experienced rider to hack out as is very nervous away from home.

Ideas please? Personally I think he's worth meat money only, mean as it may seem.

wasnt he going to be sent to auction by the 'owners' anyway so they arent likely to get more than meat money for him

they certianly wouldnt be able to sell him out to a private home easily being the type age and with the problems he has

S&W yes the latest is that they are supposedly picking him up on the 28th to go to Clitheroe the following weekend unless his current owner gives them £1000 before then!

I'd say no more than £500.

As a last resort one solution would be to move the horse away from the yard for a couple of months then bring him back when the guy gives up! Shouldn't be necessary though!

At 17 and with all those problems he wouldn't fetch £1000 if he was put up for general sale. They're just trying it on in the hope that his current owner will cough-up to save him. Some people are just horrible :(
