View Full Version : Is he trying to bond with me?

Advice from any stallion experts please! My new horse (an Arab) has recently been gelded (Feb) at the age of 9. When I'm grooming him, he bends his neck round and takes a mouthful of my coat between his teeth and holds on to it. He's not trying to bite me or rip the coat, but he seems happy to just hold it for ages. Is this a stallion trait that will gradually disappear or habit? He's always totally relaxed and happy when he does it, and looks really surprised when I move out of his reach! Is it a bonding thing?

I wouldn't say its a stallion thing but it could be, I've never had this with my 3 stallys but have with 2 geldings, I'm not sure what it means but babies go through a stage of this, some don't always grow out of it, I don't think its anything to worry about.

Silver always likes to get hold of my jacket. He just likes to have things in his mouth to play with.

its a colt type thing, i would try keep on top of it as sometimes stallions and colty horses can try test the boundaries and it might be something that escalates, it might not though my horse does something similar and as far as i know he was never a stallion he just seems to like to hold my sleeve,

Hi having two Arab stallions , this is a comfort thing and almost bonding !! One of our stallions will do this when he is unsure !! the first time he had a rider on his back he held onto my coat all the way around the field , now he is a big boy he wouldnt be seen dead , if stallions do it as they do grasping a mare - you would get the sexual bits going on as they do it when they are aroused not relaxed.
