This may have been asked recently but I cant see anything, is it ok to feed frozen carrots or not? Do you feed them?

Had a word with a few people at the yard and there are mixed opinions, wondered what everyone on here does.

Good question amanda I was going to post the same question!

I was questioned about it the other day when I gave frozen carrots to Zeb, the horses have been given frozen carrots every winter since i've been there and now suddently it's wrong? I wish they'd make their minds up!

 this is going to sound stupid but do you mean defrost them first?

I have fed frozen but then I cooked the carrots, horses where not too keen on them because they where soft but I wouldn't have thought its much different.

Not sure what you mean Rhea but I'm assuming the people who are against it feel that a horse stuffing its face with frozen 'anything' is going to give itself belly ache.

I just feel irritated as the yard have always had carrots in for the horses in winter and these were outside under some tarpaulin (which did nothing to stop them freezing obviously). Now this year apparently it's too expensive to buy them in so I have bought my own and now feeding frozen stuff is a problem?

If it is a problem then yes I suppose we would have to defrost them, I'd have to pour a kettle of hot water over them to help take the chill off!

I take some carrots into the house in the morning so they have defrosted my the time i feed the horses in the evening. I wont feed them frozen because i've known a few horses get colic with eating the frosty grass.

But surley if a horse is turned out all day in the snow that would be worse then that feeding carrots with a bit of ice on them? There are other topics about horses eating snow instead of drinking, im confused....

not sure but i feel its safer to make sure they are defristed, so i chuck a few in a bucket and pour a kettle of hot water over them, by the time I am finished all my odd jobs they are usually done!! CAnt imagine it woudl be that good for them to eat a lump of frzen carrot but as i said I dont know why !! HMM X

I dont. I've always defrosted them before feeding. All my carrots are kept in a bin which helps to keep the frost off, its just usually buying them already frosty

Not something i have ever thought about, I always do and nothing has ever gotten ill, i tend to try feed them quickly once they have frozen cause they go all slimey afterwards

Harmony doesn't seem to notice if they're frozen. Mine often are when I feed her in the evening.
It's never affected her

We keep our carrots in a bin but they are still freezing up as it's sooo cold.

I do feed them and it doesn't seem to be doing any harm x
