Argos have a sale on at the moment and their riding hats are £12.00, Has anyone brought one of these? What are they like? Would you buy one?
Thanks.:)

Personally, i'd steer clear of all these non horse branded items.

I know hats are not very good when not fitted correctly etc. But they are pas015 and bsen thingy, so they might be okay i suppose.

Their sizes are 'small' 'medium' etc. Says it all.

If it has a Kite mark, (little heart shape) and is to the current standard, not sure what they are, and a three point harness, it should be as safe as any other hat out there

agree with above - as long as they have a current safety reguilation kite mark or current safety standard number then they should be fine - infact i think it would be illegal for argod to sell them if they didnt anyway - but personally at the level i ride i doubt an argos hat would be suitable anyway! - maybe ok as a spare for hacking.

i agree with the kite mark BUT theres no way id wear a hat that hadnt been fitted properly, as we all know, they vary immensely from make to make and i would feel very unsafe in a poorly fitting hat having said that, you can look at items in Argos before you buy so i guess you could try it on first supposing you know how to check its fits correctly, just be careful Rhea if yr going to buy one, cheap rarely means quality.

It was just a thought....Thanks for the replies I won't bother.
I looked at the sizes in detail and it was the same 56 etc, I had my hat fitted when I brought it but they didn't do a very good job because its too big, at first it was ok until I got home and actually rode in it.

I agree with the others abpout having a hat fitted by someone who is trained, but I suppose if they have the kitemark/ correct standars etc then it's up to you.

Just having a correct kitemark does NOT authorise it to be a good hat!
The kitemark proves that the materials are designed and are suitable to protect the head upto a certain point of injury.
If the hat is not correctly fitted, it doesnt matter if it has a kitemark or not, damage will be sustained by whoever is wearing it.
Get a properly branded hat fitted by a professional. This is safety gear that is there to protect your life. If it doesnt fit your head exactly how it should, then you almost might as well consider not bothering to wear one. It is not something to skimp on. You buy cheap, you get cheap.
There are many things out there on the market that are dangerous and "should" be illegal, but they arent. Just because its sold by a big retailer doesnt change anything!

im not a brand snob Mandi lol... my daughter too has tesco jods etc ....
i guess what i was saying was that id want to make sure a hat, wherever it was from, was the correct fitting, im sure you have been buying/wearing hats along with yr family for a long time so id trust yr judgement re: fitting.... im not confident enough to do that so id always get one fitted

I saw the Harry Hall Elite PLus hats in Tesco for £22.50, went to the local tack shop who have the identical hats for £56 and got them to fit her for one. Told them it was for Xmas and I would be back to buy one...Then promptly went to tesco and bought the same size they had fitted for less than half price

thats the way to do it when you don't know the sizes you need.:)
It'll be a shame when the the tack dealer goes bust though & people have to try & get the Tesco staff to fit your hats because there's no more specialists!?

I wouldnt wear a hat that hasnt been fitted. I did when I was younger and even out hacking it will slide and hit me on the nose ducking under trees. Felt unsafe!
I like my champion hats I do :P!

our local tack shop now charges £5 for fitting which is deducted off the purchase price if you by a hat or body protector from them - fair play!

Yeah but then again I am sure Tesco could send someone from each shop to a course to learn how to fit hats

Agree with Matt and BC (And the rest who had the same view). I would always buy from tack shops! Tescos and the likes make enough money! The proper places are going bust because of it.

I'm surprised that Tesco etc can legally sell the hats so cheaply. Effectively, they are selling at a price that would not allow an independent retailer to make any profit by selling this hat themselves (i.e. this is a 'loss leading' product).
It seems good that the public has access to such deals, but eventually you won't have any more independent shops & more people will end up working for Tesco @ minimum wage.
How wonderful!

Tesco are taking over the world don't you know;)
I have always fitted my own hats I'm afraid, never really felt I wasn't able to know the size of my own head:confused:
Mainly buy online as is cheaper and don't have a resonably priced tack shop very local to me,don't always buy the more expensive brand names either.
Have had a fall at speed, and hat didn't budge or break, despite head getting a right crack,so guess must be doing alright with hat fitting and purchasing so far:)
As for argos ones,I would buy one if I could try it for size and liked the look of it etc.Think they must have to conform to certain standards to be legal to sell.In this age of liability I can't imagine any retailer selling something that wasn't fit for purpose.

Most people, me included, will go for the cheaper item. Since tesco's hats have the same saftey pass as others and look fine, no wonder people buy them. :)

I don't think hat fitting is rocket science. I had a tutorial in it from the AHS when I was working at a US summer camp as we had to fit the kids to the hats we had. I have been fitted for hats by trained people and of about 5 hats, twice have had a hat that wasn't right. One was so tight it gave me a headache and one was loose after a week. In my opinion you can quite accurately judge yourself if the hat fits properly.
Saying that, I buy 'brand' hats as I trust them, and obviously there is a safety issue when new riders are buying hats from places like Tesco/Argos and don't know if they are fitting them properly, but they could do that by buying online from Derby House or Robinson's or whatever. On the whole I do buy from my local tack shop (which is a DH) because I like it, I like the expertise in it and I want to support it.

I had my hat fitted once and once only, it was felt like 3 sizes too big! so I do not go much on "hat fitters" I'll be better off doing it my self.
As for them being to cheap, they are SALE prices! that is why they are cheap, their brand is Harry Hall (tescos ones) thats a good horsey Brnd isn't it? so I can't see what all the fuss is about.
