Hi,

I need a new rug for Libby as hers will not last another summer. She doesn't suffer from sweet itch but she does get terrible bites on her neck and shoulders and these last for about 3 or 4 months. The vet said she has an allergic reaction to the bites and to apply repellant and get her a fly rug. When I apply repellant she gets more bites:shocked:I have tried every make under the sun. She had a combo fly rug but still managed to get a few bites as the flies seem to be able to get to her neck.

I am thinking that a boett or something similar will be more fitted around the neck so harder for the flies to get to her.

So would you reccomend a boett or the cheaper alternative? She isn't overly careful in her rugs so I know that she will rip whatever she gets so would I be wasting money on a boett when she doesn't actually have sweet itch?

How about a snuggy hood? Not sure how much cheaper they are than boets but i have a turnout hood for anz, its waterproof and has tassley bits over the eye holes so im guessing its suitable for summer turnout! I bought it off ebay as a second - the sizing was wrong or something, i know they sell the proper sizes on ebay too!

Boetts are cheaper then snuggy hoods. Boetts are also thinner then the snuggy hoods which means the horse won't get hot & they dry quicker when washed. I find the boetts are better designed than the snuggy as the elastic holds the rug closer to the skin especially around the neck & top of the legs. They also send out loads of patches for the rug repairs free where as snuggy charge you.

You could try "Syrinx" it prevents bites and reduces irritation.

It can be bought from a company called Biosulis Ltd, in Somerset.
Natural Soap and a cream to clean and protect the affected area.
It's not cheap but it does last a while, around £20 plus pp.

Nearly forgot their number is 01761 411011.

Hope it does the trick.
