Great post!
I wouldn't ever intentionally eat horse meat.. I realise that sheep and pigs get slaughtered too and we think nothing of it, but I don't have a passion for sheep!! :cheekywink:
Each to their own, but I have a mental block about it.
As for have I ever ate horse meat.. I'm not sure. I had a meat once on holiday that was down as "steak", but it was not beef. It was 100% not beef. The smell was just overpowering and tasted vile! So maybe I have, I'll never know.

I did once when I was 14 and in France on an exchange trip with my school. I didnt realise what it was until after I had eaten it - I just thought it was steak, until the son of the family I was living with told me what it was - I ran to the bathroom and vomitted - he may as well have told me I had just eaten the family cat.
I have nothing against people eating horse, the same way we eat cow or pig, I would just rather not - because it is like eating a pet to me

I personally would chose not to. Not because i dont agree with horse slaughter, just personal choice.

Not intentionally...............if I did I would have the same reaction to it as Hevs....................but then I only eat chicken anyway. I was a veggi for 17 years and have only recently come back to eating meat.

I just couldn't do it, I'm not neccessarily against slaughter, for reasons I won't go on about, and I don't have a problem with what anyone else eats - but me personally I wouldn't be able to do it.

I never have but i think that if it was there on the menu i might give it a try. Was it on 'the f word' where gordon ramsey went to a horse farm and picked a horse to slaughter?? Where ever i saw it, it looked like a nice place and the horses seemed happy enough. I think i would most definitely want to know how the animal had been raised and looked after though...you know, like free range organic.

The thought of eating horse meat is repulsive to me But if I was really starving (stranded alone on a desert island with a dead horse)I probaly would.

Any cheap meat in places like France, hotdogs in Austria - you've probably eaten it :(

I make sure I don't eat sausages or any other meat product that may have unknown meats in when abroad, because the thought of eating horse meat really doesn't feel good!
I don't agree with the way they are transported/slaughtered and also they are my passion, just like I wouldnt eat cat or dog

I personally would avoid it, but Im not keen on eating meat where I don't know the source. Bf got a butchery and I know the meat there is 100% well raised and slaughtered 'nicely' (well as humanely as possibly)

Even the thought of eating chicken makes me wretch so no :)

I wouldn't rush out to buy it but I wouldn't not eat it.
For me the most important thing is how the animal was raised prior to slaughter. I'd rather eat a horse that was raised well than a chicken kept in a shed, intensively farmed.

I haven't and wouldn't intentionally. Don't mind people who do but i couldn't do it myself! x

Whenever I think of horses being slaughtered, I get a picture in my mind of those welfare adverts of horses in a lorry being transported for slaughter. I see one looking at the camera person with kind sad eyes and I wonder how many people have loved and groomed that horse and what happened that he should end up like this. I'm feeling very tearful now, as I always do when I see those ads.:(
So no, I have never and would never want to eat any animal that I consider to be pets.

No I wouldnt ever!! However, I havnt got a problem with other people eating it (it really annoys me when people try to upset me by talking about eating horse- I dont give a damn!!)
Its funny, my Dad never used to have a problem with it, but since we have got horses as a family has changed his tune bless him!!

I couldnt do it, to me it would feel the same as eating a dog or a cat. Just doesnt seem right. Dont have anything against people that do though, each to their own.

I am a vegetarian, so to me eating a lamb, cow or pig is as horrible an idea as eating a horse. I don't think any animals are for eating. Saying that, I do understand the idea of a mental block. If you love horses and are close to them and know how noble and gentle they are, then I think it must be difficult to reconcile eating them, in the same way that in this country we think of dogs as pets and in others countries its acceptable to eat them.

That happened to me too at exactly the same age and on a school trip to Switzerland but it was the teachers that told us afterwards!!

We had to do a presentation on horse slaughter at colege in my first year, also went to see ILPH (before it was re-named0... thats really shook us all us. There was a single person who wasn't crying!!:sad-no: I still to this day have nighmares over some of the unseen footage they don't show in those adverts. :(

I definately wouldn't intentionally.
I know it sounds a bit weird but I don't think I could look my pony in the face if I did.
I am ok with other people who do choose to do so though.

Sounds really upsetting. I have got quite upset recently seeing some articles about live transportation of horses for slaughter and the horrible conditions that they have to endure.

I would, provided it had been reared and transported etc humanely.
I wouldn't go out of my way to get hold of the stuff, and given the choice I would avoid it, but I am not so averse to the idea that I would cause offense by refusing it.
I eat meat, and don't see why it's worse to eat horses than any other animal. If I believed it was too cruel to eat horse I would not be eating chicken, beef, pork etc.

I have "sentimental" animals I can't eat - horses are on that list. So are all baby animals - sounds pathetic but I really can't stomach lamb or veal.
No problem with other people eating it if the horses are raised and slaughtered humanely. But not for me.

I ate it on a school trip to France - the teachers didn't tell us what it was until after the meal, and at the time I was quite upset.
However as an adult I have eaten it again, what concerns me most is how the animals are treated in the slaughter process and the conditions they live in at their farms. I apply this to all meat I eat. I will always spend a little more to get free range meat.

Yes - by accident in France, it was LOVELY! Realised what it was afterwards, did not really bother me. I'd not actively choose to eat horse again, however having watched recent documentaries on sky about donar meat and various kebads - if you've eaten a donner you've likely eaten horse!

My dad has eaten it loads in France and he said it was lovely! Hre has also eaten cat. I hardly eat any meat so I know i will never eat it!
I have no problem with others eating it though - each to their own!

Okay I have to say I would providing it had been reared and slaughtered in the best possible conditions, that said I'm the same with all meat as I grew up on a farm and wouldn't eat any meat from intensively reared animals.

 I bet we taste lovely too Candy!
Its not that I'd be disgusted if I ate it.. its just that I'd remember how much I adore horses and have longed for one and spent years worshipping them almost  so I'd be disappointed in myself, if that makes sense?
But I LOVE meat other than that, I'm a huge meat eater!

no, never have and am always so careful when i go abroad. i can understand why people do eat it etc and do not judge them for it but i never could. also most of the horses that go for horse meat have not been raised and transorted in a humane way, i do not have a figure for it but it is a massive majority and if you buy it in a restaurant etc you will never know wher it hasd come from. i totally disagree with the live export situation, eating horses is another but that is totally inexcusable and inhumane and i feel while ever there is a market for it it will continue.

Similar case to Hevs ate horse meat on holiday in France without knowing_ I am now a veggie. I hate the breeding of all animals for meat as I think it takes away their soul as they are bred to be docile and stupid. Somehow think it is worse for horses as they seem more aware and the spirit isn't bred out of them in the same way.
