Hi folks, remember my friend with the youngster with a wonky leg. You lot were really reassuring when I last posted and I passed on all your stories.

For those that don't know she has a 2 yr old gelding IDxTB approx 15.2hh, to be used hopefully for hacking, showing and riding club stuff. One of his back legs has a slightly wonky hoof with the outside not growing as much as the inside hoof, so it look like he's walking on the outside of his hoof if that makes sense. He's had a barefoot trimmer who isn't too concened and following advice on here, she has also had he's back checked. His pelvis was slightly tilted and a small area behind were his saddle will go (eventually) was tender. Neither the trimmer or back person seem too concerned.

But, yesterday she had a friend visit and she advised her to sell him this year rising 3 because of his foot saying that his fetlock joint in particular will have excess wear and tear....end of! Now of course, she's back in panic mode!

I'd like some views/experiences please if you can help. :)

To be quite honest..... I would only take advice from a Vet on this.

He's the most qualified to say whether there would be a long term problem or not..... As for selling - if it's bad - surely the horse wouldn't ass any Vetting - hence probably no sale.... I'd go for Vets advice - then it would put her mind complete at rest!

I would also get a vet out to have a look, whilst they like to usually fix these problems much earlier, 2 yrs is probably not too old to consider some remedial shoeing, which although will not cure the problem entirely, could prolong the horses ridden career. The horse will suffer excessive wear and tear of the fetlock joint, and will probably suffer from artheritis at an earlier age, he will also need regular physio when ridden to keep his back straight.
If this horse was meant to be an event horse, i would be concerned he would not wihtstand the workload, but to be honest as a riding club orse, with the corect care, i dont think it would be too much of a problem.

yes having a small or large turn what ever it is on a foot will mean excess wear and tear but who cares it doesnt sound like your friend is wanting to go jump round Bramham or anything like that in whcih case thats the only time really your going to be worried

my horses legs are put on something special he is 14 has jumped in Holland and in this country has won lots of money BSJA and has a good BD record so he has done quite a lot of work for a horse and he is sound as anything and still will pass a five stage vetting

my friends horses legs are incredibly wonky and he has competed up to intermediate eventing and was ridden by Austin O'connor its still sound and doing great and he is nearly 18

it might in his older days be a little bit of a worry but you just manage things properly and it will be fine, it might also be something that changes as he grows and with a good remidal farrier you can sort it out
