i need to section off a couple of acres for gurt and jazz to be in together. i was going to do sheep fencing then run a strand of electric on top. the fencing is £35 per roll in scats i was wondering if there was a cheaper option? my field is huge and ill need a good 7 rolls just down one side and probably another 5 to go across! cant think of cheaper options though!

Sheep fencing as in the metal square mesh?
I honest to god wouldnt put a horse near that stuff.
Posts arent that expensive - we could get them at 50p per post.

ive always had it in my fields and never had many probs, only a couple of pulled shoes, also there is deer fencing all the way round, but im not sure if i could afford post and rail as its a large area to be fenced off although alot of the posts are already in the ground, id just have to put a post inbtween the existing posts as it was set out for electric fencing. i need to have them seperated off from the others as i dont trust tyler or trudee with a new born as far as i could throw them!

I'd go for electric tape, 2 strands maybe 3 if it's for a mare/foal and make sure it's turned on. Wouldn't put a foal anywhere near sheep fencing, sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

How about plain wire? You could do 2 or 3 strands of that with wooden posts and put some electric tape on the side with the horses in.

I wouldnt have a foal anywhere near any kind of metal wire fencing, either post and rail or electric.

Wire is asking for trouble.
I agree with above, there is always a first time. I know someone who lost her horse to sheep fencing because it was too much of a chore to take it out. Especially with having a foal around, put their safety first.

You electric fencing, its cheaper, that wire is awful, wouldn't have it around new born foals anyway, if something was to happen you would be devastated, also the vet bill will be bigger then a few fence polls.

You can get 'stock' fencing now that's designed for horses, so the squares are so small that even a foal couldn't get caught in it. You'll find it if you google for it. I can't remember the make though.

Thats what I was going to suggest too. Was discussing fencing with my farrier (she breeds) and she thinks this is by far the safest - they bounce off it apparently! She hates post and rail, has had several horses go through it and get impaled. I want something it nice small holes for babies though. Welded mesh is lovely but expensive. Maybe even chain link would do the trick?
