He usually quite good with me but I said to my sister on saturday to give him a go and catch him in the field and walk him down. As she has too on Wednesday as im at work and he having his little operation.

Anyway he was good when she went up and good to put head collor on then when she was trying to do it up, he reared up and looked like he tried to kick with front legs. She let go obviously and then she managed to do it up and gave him back to me to walk up.

A horse was out when I was taking him back which I havnt done before, and the horse is only 3yrs so he was playing up and then Lexus tried to bolt I managed to hold him then went up in the air and I pulled on his head collor and jerked it and he finally stopped and did a fancy trot with tail in the air snorting all the way to the stable. Which I dont mind as he only baby and excited.

I then got him into the stable and he was good for me to brush him and calmed down loads. A gelding then walked by and at the same time I was pushing him back as I wanted to get out of the stable, and he kicked out at the door with his front leg and caught my elbow. Luckily with his knee and not the hoof so wasnt to bad. I told him no and pushed him back.

Is this coltish or just bad behaviour? He getting gelded on this Wednesday which should calm him down. Or do you think he is just being naughty and needs to be told not to do it.

Also forgot to mention he was very well behaved in the other field, but since he been in this new field with more grass he has got worse and his poos are sloppy. Maybe it could be this? As for the first week he was leaving his hay in the stable as he was full up. Also he on condition mix which I will change after this bag. Needed to give him it though as he was out of condition and under weight.

Sounds as though he is being overfed and has too much energy.......too much condition on a baby can do more harm than good. if he's out on grass I'd just give him a balancer to ensure he's getting all the nutrients he needs, he doesn't need a mix.

Remember that spring is in the air, once he's been gelded he'll calm down a bit, but he's only a baby and they do get excited :cheekywink:

too many people use the fact that they are colts as a reason for bad behaviour in my books doesnt matter what he is he is being naughty and should be handled accordingly, you are doing right with him make sure he knows its not acceptable and tell him off for it,

if he is going to be a naughty boy when horses are lead past tie him up and make sure he stands still where you want and doesnt use it as an excuse, he may become better after being gleded but just cause he is a colt at the moment doesnt mean that the naughty things are acceptable, yes he is a baby and it was different and exciting but he needs to get over it and behave

i wouldnt give him too much feed soon the grass will be getting much better and he will be fine on grass and hay, i would give him a supplement or balancer so he gets all his nutrients and just give him a tiny bit of chaff and add more if he looks poor again or add some sugarbeet, most babies dont need feeding and him being too fat or having too much feed can do just as much damage and cause problems as having too little

Yes colts do this but you've got to remember he was unhandled, being with you is very different to where he came from, your boss, he needs to know this all the time. All youngsters do this not just colts, its amazing the change in a horse with a bit more grass.

Has your sister bought him in before. I know when we have had someone new bring our yearling in she has played up. IF he relys on you and he could be just alittle unsure of her doing it

No she hasnt before, she walked him off the trailer when he arrived as I had shingles as i didnt want to incase he was strong but he was fine so straight after that I have done everything.

Im mainly on my own in the stable with him aswell doing everthing as he dont like getting over crowded.
