Has any one got any tips or advice on how to clean and maintain healthy legs?
When i bring Dylan in from the field i wash down his legs to get the mud off then give them a good bush and clean his hoofs out. Would it be best to dry his legs afterwards? i dont like leaving them wet.

Ours get washed off with warm water, excess taken off with a towel and then premier equine wraps on which having a wicking effect. Then they are taken off when the legs are dry.

I would agree with above, never leave them soaking wet always try n dry off as much as possible to avoid any chaffing or other skin related problems.

Would towel drying be sufficient?

I personally dont wash mud off my horses legs, I leave it to dry over night and brush it off with a plastic curry comb in the morning if i need to x

i also wash legs down with water to remove all the mud away and look for any injuries etc.
Then I would towl dry with a nice soft towl to get acces water off dont like leaving legs too wet horses are like us loose heat like we do if we wash our hair and leave it to dry.

Personally I've always left the mud to dry overnight and brushed it off in the morning (unless they have an injury, or are completely covered in mud, etc).
Although I'm sure in many cases it's fine to wash the mud off, I was taught that hosing the mud off actually increased the risk of mud fever, as your taking oils out of their coat when you wash them, making the mud more likely to work it's way to the skin and cause problems.

I've found it depends on the mud. Where we are now, it dries over night and brushes out. At our old yard it was red clay and wouldn't dry so we used to wash it off and towel-dry.
MFP oil is really good to help - you put a small amount on clean legs and it stops the mud getting through to the skin and makes it easier to brush out when dry.
