I've used baileys no4 before but wondered if there is anything else i can try. Magic is getting fairly fit but isn't building much muscle so i'd like to give him something to help with this. At the moment he just gets a big haynet and alfa a oil.

Well it will just be food with things in to aid muscle growth while the horse is worked. Magic is worked nearly every day :)

Isn't there a feed called topline or something?

IM sure there is one called Muscle builder but i imagine any kind of build up cube woudl do the job and you would be looking for something with quite high protein as you need protein to grow tissue.
Alfa A is quite high protein so maybe just up that and a balancer or supplement so that he is getting the right kinds and enough vitamins and minerals to build the muscle

Ah so these wouldn't be good for fattys or lami prone then?

Thanks smile and wave, you're right, i think alfa a oil is quite high in protein anyway. He's only getting a handful at the moment so i can up that. Now to search for a balancer that won't bankrupt me lol.
I don't think any kind of build up food would be good for lami prone horses.

Are you feeding the correct quantity of the topline condition cubes to your horse?
That would help alot, but if you feel this could make him hot up then I would suggest the feed balancer called Equilibra 500, it wont hot your horse up, but has made a real difference to Littlemans topline in just 3 months. If you feed a balancer you should only really add a chaff ie AlfaA or/and sugarbeet to it to help gain weight. Otherwise you can upset the balance of vits and mins. (You can feed others aswell, but would strongly advise you speak to a nutritionalist first).
If you are feeding the correct amount of N04 then Global Herbs do a product called Muscle Up, might be worth a try!
If you require to add condition or muscle/topline to a lami prone horse or pony, Allen & Page do one called Sugar and cereal intolerance mix, which is approved by the lami trust.

Thanks TLM, he isn't only no4 at the moment. I'll look into that balancer though :)

you dont necessarily need a balancer i persoanlly dont use them as they are so damn pricey, i use a supplement from feedmark called Benevit its super chea and goes a long way and mine have never looked so good, i bought a massive sack just before xmas and have managed to fill three 5kg buckets with it and i still havent finished the first tub! and im feeding two one of which is on a lot cause she is pregnant

What about pink powder? Isn't that supposed to add condition?

feeds/supplements can help improve topline/condition/coat etc
and some bulk etc. some are very good
however without the wieght you wont getthe muscle
and the best way to muscle him up and get her/him built up its lots of hill work out hacking. doing roadwork and trotting and working up big hills helps to build up muscle also work on the possoa. : ) xx
but yeh equilibra is great stuff, really helps gain condition/wieght etc

Can't help I'm afraid but am following this post with interest!
Vinny has dropped a bit of weight lately, he's still muscular and very fit but there is not an ounce of fat on him :/ As the racing doesn't start for another 2 months I think I have got a little ahead of myself.
Think I will try out some conditioning/build up mix. Currently he's on comp mix, not sure how this is different. Sorry to hijack ur post!

Neo's dropped back a bit too. i think its being out longer so not getting so much haylage in the stable and the last batch isn't as "heavy" as the first. I've just put him on Affa A instaed of HiFi to give him a bit more goodness.
I don't use a balancer just a NAF supliment thats supposed to have everything in.

I've been using my local feed merchant's own brand of conditioning mix since my last post, as well as loads of haylage, sugar beet, chaff and competition mix when he's working (which he hasn't for the last week as he has bad mud fever :().
I've noticed a huge difference. Suddenly Vinny's muscles are popping out all over the place! (Along with his eyeballs, which is inevitable when he's this fit. Instead of reacting to a monster in the hedge by slowing down and staring at it, he now leaps out of his skin and snorts loudly as if to say 'WHAT THE HELL IS THAT OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO DIE!')
